that guy that didnt weld it used a thick corck gasket, yea im keen to see how you go with him ive hurd he gets stuff done but that $150 for the email kinda put me off i thought that was a bit rough, kinda makes you scared to ask Qs as its just going to cost more and more, ive been told graham burton is good too,
reason i was keen on doug is he didnt require a chassis strength test which would save $$$ and head aches, but ill ring them all closer to the time,

does ur sunny have any rust?

Wherever you go, they all charge like wounded bulls!
Rory took a look at mine and gave it the go ahead for structural riigidity, she's pretty clean. Only spot of rust that really needs looking at is where the two panels meet passenger side, under bonnet. Where all sunnys rust, but this is the least i've seen. She was rust treated from new!

updates plzzzzzz!!

Hi guys. Haven't updated in a little while. To be honest I haven't achieved as much as I would have liked. At the moment work doesn't leave much time for the datto. I've been doing little bits here & there like cleaning up some wiring and finishing cutting some bits for the reinforcing of the drive tunnel as below.


I have also removed the fuel tank as i am hoping to get an in tank pump set up in there. I have dropped it to Scott @ Maddat as he knows a guy that will do the welding. Its an odd shape as the spare is above it, but due to the pipes being accessible from above should be easy enough to hook up (hopefully).


At this stage I am looking at sending the Sunny up to Scott to sort out some things to speed this project up. Like finishing a few bits on the diff and tailshaft. Just things that will take me forever to do at home with the lack of tools & space. I really want the Sunny on the road this year, it's killing me driving the work car everywhere! My thoughts are when it comes back there will still be work for me to do, but less fabrication as its out of my depth & my welding skills are not up to scratch.

For a bit history, a while ago a bought a wheels magazine from from 1979 off ebay. Here's the specs from their test, including the 21sec 1/4 mile :)

any updates??

Only minor update is that on the Wednesday just gone, I had the Sunny picked up and she's now sitting in the maddat workshop.
One issue we had was that there were no springs with the correct rate and size, height etc. that would suit and manufacturers wouldn't guarantee if made, they would be the right height. So have ended up going an adjustable coil over type set up (shocks in original spot). This is a bit beyond me so Scott is setting it up and finishing off the brake lines on the diff.
Also getting him to bend up the fuel lines and some welding over the trans tunnel while he's in there. The A/C compressor is hitting a support so he will mod that to clear and possibly the tailshaft.
The Fuel tank has been finished so will see how that fits shortly.

Hopefully in a few weeks there will be some news down the wire of how it's progressing. Definitely pushing to get this on the road sooner rather than later, even if I am not as hands on as I would have liked to be. But in the end it will be done the right way first time rather than me wasting hours scratching my head with the wrong tools!

Edit: Have an issue of the front tyres hitting the front guards when turning. As I had only been pushing it forwards and back i hadn't noticed it. When we were putting it on the trailer it was pretty clear... more mucking around!

Some updates on the Sunny!
Its sitting here at the moment:


Scott from MADDAT is putting some finishing touches on things i have started but not completed and general tidying up of the mechanicals I have not touched yet.

The rear end is basically set up now with all hard & flexi brake lines completed. New Koni Shocks in. The springs are 200mm, waiting on some 150mm so we can have some more play on the finished product. Looks the goods :)



New 8mm fuel line is run in and you can also see the tailshaft is complete and fitted. The hand brake has to be relocated so is not finished yet. Good ol' Sunny had room in the brackets to fit the extra line so all looks standard!





Also the fuel tank is complete and fitted. All pipes fitted in the standard sunny set-up with the connections accessible from the boot. So no give aways if i'm putting the shopping in the boot. Slight give away is the small drop in the tank on the RHS to fit the pump and pick up, only to the keen observer..



Things are progressing quite nicely and should have some more progress in a month or so. A few things will take a bit of mucking about like the pipes for the radiator, I don't know what they were thinking when they welded the inlets on!
The car is still a way off but a looking forward to getting it registered already :D

This looks awesome dude, when are you planning of having it finished? Would be cool if you'd bring it out on a cruise!

Not sure when it will all be finished mate... I think it should be key started in a few months maybe, just depends on work load.. Then I have to find someone to cut the front guards so the wheels clear the arch. Then finish the A/C and interior etc.
Obviously engineering is last and fingers crossed it all goes smoothly & yes,, I will definitely be up for a cruise when it's rego'd, that's a given!
