Studs weren't snapped all the way off. We had to work the thread on the studs to get the lugs to thread back on.

I called the shop and after a little complaining they asked me to bring it in show them what I was talking about before they would agree to make any repairs.

I'll get a few pics in the morning before I haul it off of the broken studs if I can.

I donno Jordan its hard to tell but you can see more detail in the vid, they look pretty short, especially if he was running spacers. He said they snapped about a half inch from the hub which looks about right and the remaining thread is still in the lugs. Were you running spacers Metalmonkey? Were they the correct Lugs for the thread? Maybe they seemed to be tight but just cross-threaded instead? I dunno, I just think this crash scene needs a little more investigating before you start ripping on him while hes down :/

I'm not sure if they were correct lugs. They were on the car when I bought them. They seem correct, but I'm not too sure. When I first removed them after I bought the car to replace the rotors they were on way to tight. I snapped a 1/2 inch drive extension trying to get them loose.

The last owner had some spacers on it, but they were small enough that it didn't seem to make a difference so I removed them when I replaced the rotors.

It's possible that I had them cross-threaded and they wern't tight, but what are the chances that I did that to all 4?

I haven't removed the tire since we got it home. And I'm almost afraid to because I need to get it to the shop tomorrow. I'll look at it all a bit closer when I get it there. I'm putting it on a dolly to get it there, just because I don't want to risk another accident and cause more damage then I have already.

Also, I appreciate the support. Seems like just about everybody here short of a few people wanted to jump to the conclusion that I was an idiot, screwed it up, and shouldn't be driving a Datsun.

since you stated that a shop had just installed the new studs, it is a possibility that they did not press them in all the way, or as i have seen in the past they used the lug nut to suck the stud into the hub and thought it was tight. then you drive it around and it loosens up the wheel nuts. best of luck with your situation, i would venture to say you might need a replacement hub too....

dont know why people are being so harsh?, they should stick their opinions where they fit

could be as simple as a nuff nuff at a wheel shop using a rattle gun on the wrong setting and over-tightening/stretching them. snapping a 1/2 inch drive extension bar is a fair effort!

can happen to anyone, bad luck mate, good thing about datsuns it wont cost much to get it going again

i've known plenty of people to have wheels fall off, one of the hazards of driving

Those are all very fair possibilities. All I'm saying is that I know they were torqued down when I was finished. I'm no noob when it comes to cars, just Datsuns. No need for everyone jumping on me saying I shouldn't be around a car.

I'll find out what the problem was tomorrow morning when i tow her off.

And as for that video.... that made my night!!

So the short version of this morning's story is I got it over to the shop, and the shop owner comes out and puts it on a lift and pulls off all 4 tires. He's agreed to replace all the studs himself. He said the studs on the front were not pressed in all the way and what probably happened is that they slid moved around as it was driven and the lugs loosened? I think that's how he put it.
He's replacing the hub as well as the bearing cap and refunding me the cost of my rotor, since it's damaged as a result of it hitting the ground.
