GG if datsun axles break they break right after the axle spline, then the large bit of the axle continues to spin around and make a mess of the centre...if you are carrying some speed when it breaks

old holdens and stuff break near the wheel bearing as the axle is undersized the whole way

A H145 will hold up most builds on an A series motor, and some CA motors. I ran a H145 on my early A15 motor that was build with a racing cam and dual webers. I was drag racing the car. I think I even ran Nitrous on the H145. It held up. I wanted mor traction so I moved up to a H150 but welded the spider gears. At that point I also added a supercharger to the system. With both wheels spinning on the H150 it didn't take long to put to much torque on the axles and I ended up breaking one of them. I was told with my set up that I would not break a H165 so I went to that and welded up the spider gears. Half way through the race season, I broke that one to. Welding the gears puts to much stress on the axles. You won't break the weld as long as you do a good job of welding it. But you may break an axle shaft.
Now Im up to a H190 out of a 320 pickup. These axles are huge. I hope it holds up to the new Z24 motor that is going in.
Project is close to being done.

Hi bit of a noob question but does welding the centre of the diff weaken or strengthen it?
or will it just weaken something else

was thinking in the back of a lightweight ute behind a 1400 it would be ok??

oh and i know they are illegal
Ever wonder why they are illegal?

Do you know that your insurance company will wipe you like a dirty arse if you prang it & discover that it has a locker?
[You agreed to keep the vehicle in a 'roadworthy' condition & the locker doesn't qualify.]

can just get a really tight LSD that never slips with the weight of a datsun, then it would be legal even though it would act exactly the same as a locker. as techincally the axles arent jointed...just takes alot to unjoint them

Pigdog has hit the nail on the head! I use one of Topgear's Torsen LSD in the racecar and they are worth their weight in gold!!! LSD is really the only way (yes they cost $$$, but well worth the investment) whilst lockers will try to kill you on a wet public road! The car will only turn quickly with throttle input in the wet - a real drama even if we are as good as we think we are
Even the LSD in my XR6 tubo ute commands a lot of respect in the wet ...... any real boost and she will kick sideways instantly!!!! At least with an LSD your car will turn corners when you get off the gas - and save those sweet rims from snapping in half on the gutter !!!
Cheers.

haha so true!
seriously, in the wet i've only found my car to be more predictable with a locker, open diff would single spin then light up both unpredictably and jump out sideways and start tank slapping. i learnt how to control it on the racetrack and lockers are very predictable if you have some experience.
plus it does hektik doughies now!

Bah ha ha ha heckdik doughies thats classic !!!!
I ve found the same thing one wheel gets spinning which is ok than the other kicks in or they swap sides, pain in the ass and very unpredictable.

Locker/LSD predictable and awesome with the right throttle control.

Wouldnt a LSD be like 1500-2000?
