Hey Lags,
Yeah, well I'm not going to bullshit you, but I'm pretty certain the first video was with the engine knocking pretty severely due to the 'pancake' GX head (milled excessively). There was also some timing errors and an exhaust leak.
I spoke to the engine builder who claimed the compression ratio was 12:1, and I figured with some high octane fuel (e85 - which is NLA in SA) and some octane booster I'd get away with it, so I found out pretty quick that the comp ratio was completely different. (lesson 001 measure, measure, measure then check and check and check) I shouldn't have taken his word for it.
After measuring everything up it turned out to be about 15:1 .......... yeah.
But this is a learning curve as much as a hobby for me so I figured I was lucky that I didn't put the engine under load when it was knocking so badly. To tell you the truth, the video audio actually helped to identify a knock rather than an exhaust note, so it was the video that confirmed it (a bit hard to hear anything when it was running).
Anyway the head on it now is a stock H75 with some old springs and I plan to use the GX head a little later (unless old mate decides to finally buy it) when I've got the carbs running sweet.
D, yeah I'm in debt pretty bad, nothing serious! but my credit card is smoking after all the swiping it's copped!
I f-in love Datsun 1000's so bad, it's going to be a real problem when I have a decent income....
EDIT SORRY I meant pinging where I said knocking.
EDIT EDIT; No, no I meant knocking, pffft.

Hey Finn,
Well I had a buyer for the reconditioned GX head +shim and then he disappeared. I have the head and shim ready to go but I'm not sure that I want to run it just yet, or whether the bloke wants to buy the gear.
I've started on the next setup which is a set of downdraft Keihin carbs running on a manifold which sits very close to the GX head, got the manifolds drawn up and I'm looking at getting them cut from billet alloy.
Anyway going back to what I said before I'm wondering it it was pre-ignition that I was getting. Either way it's all better now.
But yeah I'm still deciding on the Head + shim idea, in the time being I'll get the carbs setup sweet so I have something that I can actually drive! Hahaha.

Hello,
Okay sure, I'll have the 3d Model up today or tomorrow.
Do you have sidies or downdraft? what runner length would you prefer? I'm going for as close as possible.
Chris

I think they are the same ones!!! short is nice as long as the tops clear the rocker cover enough Otherwise just a tad longer on an angle and then the airbox can be angled a tad the parallel to the bonnet and out the wheel well?

Got the Mikuni sidedraughts to behave. Just need some fine tuning now, finding it real hard to stay focused on the sidedraughts when I want the bike carbs going so bad. Here is the model by the way, I did finish it a while ago but kinda forgot about it.
See what I mean by 'close' to the head?! These sit at exactly the same angle as the ports on my head so it's custom alright.
EDIT: The adjustment of the viewport make the manifolds faces look like they are sitting square against the head face, they are, they just don't look it.
