NO! there isn't enough room between the firewall and the core support for an inline 6 to fit. I own a 720, my solution was to put a VG30 into it. Not a bad fit, but I had to build a custom oilpan to clear the front diff. I haven't said anything about it because this is a 1200 forum.

L-six will fit in a little Datsun 1200. L26 in Datsun 1200: Yes, you will need to cut the firewall. It requires major modifications.

Swap a stock KA24 in there, more power than your L18 "worked" engine. And it may fit the transmission you already have.
There's also a guy putting a CA18DET into his 720, i dunno why as the 720 is fairly heavy a larger engine would seem a better choice.

pretty much any nissan engine from the 80s or early 90s can possibly bolt up to your gearbox, as they run 71 series boxes. so you can just swap the bellhousing section of the gearbox over to the one that suits the engine. thats give you many choices. L series, Z series, CA, SR, FJ, RB, VG but then your gearbox might not be up to the task depending on the power output
but being 2wd i wouldnt really choose a conversion just coz its possible to use your standard gearbox, and there are much harder things to do in an engine conversion than wiring an ecu
SR would be a better choice than KA, more power and they have stock turbo gear. turbo'd CA is also more powerful than an NA KA24
