Nah sorry D, seriously it looks good! Is that a sticker or a badge? A badge format would be very expensive to make as it has alot of detail.

A small update, thanks to Finn he has rescued the whole operation by kindly donating his boot badge. It is broken but it will be fine.

Initial costs from the metal casters was not encouraging (they have MUCH bigger fish to fry) so I am now in contact with a smaller enterprise that specialises in the smaller work. By smaller I mean one man band sort of deal.

So it shouldn't be too much longer until we have badges, the numbers are a little low though do we have anymore interest? It's not a big deal but more numbers is always better.

No wos Chris I just made it up and would
consider it better made as an adhesive
foil label with gel coating for 3d effect.

Okay got a pricing on getting a mould manufactured, and it was surprisingly expensive.

So I'm not sure if this will go ahead, as the numbers are a little low. Normally you can expect about 3/4's of the people to commit, so that only leaves about 4 or 5 badges spoken for.... no way near enough to get these out at a reasonable price.

Any more interest?

Thats just the casting? let alone the chroming...dont sound very hopeful
Maybe look at some smaller casters most of the ones ive dealt with my jewellery only charge a small casting fee ontop of the cost of the metal cast and the wax injection moulds...even the large ones are about $40. Im not sure how big they would go but its not THAT big and item. I really thought that would be the cheap part of the operation.

I guess getting two layers laser-cut in stainless then somehow joined (think invisible-riveted maybe?) together is still out of the question?

Exactly. Can get one off items but they end up very average quality and a high number of defects, these also require more time dressing them before chroming. Price would end up being more than getting a mould set i reckon.

The mould maker I have is a one man band and the quality of the mould is exceedingly high (hence the price), meaning the parts will go straight to the chromer instead of undergoing several round of deburring and cleaning.

I get to keep the mould obviously so at least we won;t run out of badges, but it either comes down to people buying more or people deciding on how much they want to pay. As with most group buys you should only expect to 75% of the eoi to commit so at the moment it doesn't look like it'll happen.

Laser cutting and laminating was my first intention but they will need to be cleaned and polished individually before laminating (more $$$$)the bed of the laser machine is about twice the size of the average living room so the cutter wasn't keen on having his lads crawl into the bed to salvage the tiny letters that drop from the host sheet.

How many units are we talking about here in order to make it worthwhile and at what price?

Chris prob already covered but just in case wouldnt if be easier in stainless and CNC
machining? Ive had some stuff done in the past in Japan using a desktop sized CNC unit
and was so much cheaper than other methods.

exhuming this thread again...
Ive been looking into 3d printing services that can do a variety of materials including stainless.
My 3D moddeling skills are getting better also...(Ive tried to enlist my 12yo stepson into learning it so hell be able to teach me in a couplke of months :)) I reckkon id be able to make a satisfactory 3d model of one.
So just say we have the file...what would be the legalites of printing this badge be? Is it copyrighted?...could be the final hurdle :/

I'm sure you couldn't sell them but um sure if you gave them away and postage cost increase dramatically for some unknown reason that may be fine
