um that doesnt sound good at all, they are collapsible, maybe they have been in a bad accident, im not sure if they still work if the collapsible bit is used though

Yea its weird that i can push pull it.

It wont come all the way out so it stops after 1 inch of movement and seats again when i push it back.

Where could this play be happening?

Might have been colapsed before

The column has a funny looking plate that mounts it to the shell via the pedal box, there is a small shaft in the column check to see if it is the part that is moving or the shaft inside it that has the movement ,either way the column sounds abit suss

Its proably that the nylon type pins that hold the two pieces of the collapsable column in place have broken. [one part of the column slides over the other.] The only thing stopping you from pulling the top half out all together will be the earth wire that is soldered between those two parts. That wire provides thet earth path for the horn cct.

Time to swap out the steering column or have it repaired is possible.

That's not normal.

I dunno what would cause it. It might be Collapsible column -- the 1200 was in a wreck, or driver hit the wheel with a hammer trying to remove it.

Most 1200s don't have a collapsible column, but perhaps the newer 1200 utes do.

The Collapsible Steering Column has diamond pattern plastic covering like this:

The regular Steering Gearbox (non-collapsible) column is plain tube:

If you get stuck Adam, I have a surplus "regular" column I can offer up.

Yea it is the later ute / colapsable column.
I have had this ute for a year now and im just finding and fixing all the dodgy stuff that has been "fixed" over the years.

Just had to redo the 5spd gearbox mount turns out the box wasnt even bolted to the mount!!!!!

I will put it on the todo list and Benny thanks for the offer i may just have to take up that offer, how hard would it be to disconect from the steering box?

Thanks all

take the column and box out as one assembly. As two things will usually happen if you separate the column from the steering box. * oil will go all over the place and * more times often its a complete bitch to line up the bearing at the base of the column when inserting it back into the steering box. For the sake of three bolts [that mount the box to the chassis rail and the tapered shaft that connects the drag link to the steering arm, I find it easier to pull the whole thing out.
