Hey guys so i have just finished fitting up my new engine in my sunny truck, i went from the standard A12 to an A14 with twin dellortos but now for some stupid reason it doesnt have spark hence no run.

So i have searched on here through all of the wiki sections and i have the coil all hooked back up the same and the only thing i have changed for the ignition side of things is having the dizzy rebuilt with having the vac advance removed and recurved to suit the new cam. Everything cranks nicely, has oil pressure and has fuel but when checking for spark i keep getting donuts.

One of the things i have been thinking about is the fact that since i have now fitted up dellortos i no longer am able to hook up half of the loom in the engine bay as the loom had plugs going to the stock carby and an oxy sensor in the exhaust manifold

Any thoughts as to what it could be as i really need to make sure this is running before the long wkend is over.

Steve

Check the basics.

* 12V at the coil while key turned to Start?

* Distributor wire pinched or loose inside the distributor?

* Disconnect tachometer wire at coil when testing

ok so i know the coil works but here is a good one for who ever thinks they might be able to help, when i pulled the dizzy out to check it and see if it worked (earth lead to the base of the dizzy to the battery and spark plug to the battery as well with the dizzy hooked up to the coil) i spun the gear of the dizzy and BAM i have spark!!!! Put it all back into the engine and check earth of the block/head (all good and all earthed nicely as well) recheck for spark with it all hooked back up and once again no spark

So this now has me really all screwed up and lost again

Please throw ideas at me ppl as im starting to run out of ideas now

So you earthed dizzy and it worked???? Might be broken wire somewhere? Is there a condenser hooked up to the dizzy still? Or coil? Is it a elec dizzy coil?
Maybe just earth dizzy base play the engine earth, th Irving if new might not be letting it earth right? Just ideas.

I won't suggest any more as last time I did I was told my ideas were cr@p and to shut the f up.
You don't know unless you try and some times it's stuff outside the norm that works.

So no spark when you crank the engine with the key

But spark when you remove the distributor and rotate it by hand?

That's why you should check for 12V at coil *while cranking*. Turning key to S is different than turning key to On/Run. Different wires. On/Run is not 12V. Pull the S wire from the starter, turn key to S and hold it there. Is there 12V at the coil+ terminal? There must be for it to start correctly.

Also install distributor without cap, and crank the engine. Does the rotor turn?

Hot wire it and see if it'll work (wire the ignition straight to the battery). If it does then all you have to do is find the wiring fault.

there is only one wire at the coil with 12V and that is the B/R wire and that is the case with ON/Start possition for the key

did the normal checks with the cap off and all that sort of thing already. What is gettign me is this was a running ute last week and all i have done is change the engine over, it has the same ignition gear as what the other engine had apart from having the dizzy rebuilt

If there is an issue with the S wire you are talking about where do i find its sorce and fix it???

Stop explaining the wires, and start testing it!

1. Pull the S wire from the starter, so it won't turn the engine
2. turn key to S and hold it there.
3. Measure voltage at coil+ terminal

Is there 12V at the coil+ terminal? There must be for it to start correctly. If not, you can jumper temporarily from battery to coil and it will likely start right up.

There can be many reasons why it's not working. After you do some more testing, we can narrow down the exact cause.

One possibility is the distributor was rebuilt incorrectly. There are wires inside it after all. But don't worry about that quite yet.

I have 1 suggestion. Did new motor ever run?
Is it possible that it has an early a12 cam and the a14 dizzy has nothing to drive it, remove dizzy cap and crank it. Does dizzy turn?
