Love the color on the car! Im kind of cursed with the color of Maroon for cars. Most all of the cars Ive had have been Maroon. Luckily I have a yellow Datsun.

So the datsun is going to be ready to start tomorrow, only things left to do is buy a battery clamp, small air filter, and a new pollution control hose. Fair bit of a #OOPS# around with all the little bits, took longer then I thought. Pics.

Well derp to me is all I can say, cranked it for a bit and could smell fuel in the carb, but it was not firing up :(, so I changed the coil over, still not spark, then I checked the points were opening, yep they did, and upon putting dizzy cap on, I realized that the negative from the coil was on the wrong terminal on the dizzy, so fixed that up.
So I asked my old man to hold the timing gun to see if there was spark this time, about 1/4 of a second after I tried to crank it, it had started, was revving high and heated up unusually quick (i.e extractors were burning paint in about 5-6 seconds, the thermostat had opened before 1 min of running time), was also blowing lots of rich smoke.
The best part was it did not miss a beat, fired every time and revved like mad when on the gas.
So I am going to wait for it to cool down now and check the timing is not retarded and reduce the fuel mixture.
Quick question, does anyone know if there is a idle speed screw on a 32/36 weber carb? or is it just the fuel mixture that dictates idle speed?

Yes, the weber 32/36 is traditional carburetor, it has both idle speed and idle mixture screws.

Thanks dd, hopefully timing is the reason it seems to be heating up so quick, the thermostat definately opened quickly, but it is a hot day and it sounded like it was on 2-3000 rpm.

Round 2 saw the idle speed go down a bit, took about 5 mins to warm up to thermostat open this time, checked the timing, it seemed to be sitting on 15*, I'll check this when I do the dwell angle/idle speed/fuel mixture tune tomorrow, I extended the wiring for the coil, as it was wired for a front dizzy, so I had to extend it so I could see my water temp guage work.
It seemed to sit just over the warm mark on the gauge, now I am not completely sure if the gauge stopped working when it got there as after testing the clutch adjustment I came back and it was back to the cold mark, noting that to get the fuel gauge moving I gave it the good old hard tap on the dash. So I am unsure if the gauge really only read just above warm, it could have failed when I was flicking the dash.
The light's, alternator/electrical system proved to be working quite well, the clutch seems to disengage well, but it picks up right off the floor, in previous cars I loved this adjustment, but not having driven in over 6 months I was a little unused to it, will test this out a bit while driving to get the feel again.
The other issue I could find was the idling, While i got it to idle a bit lower by adjusting the throttle cable bracket, I does not always seem to return right to the idle screw (nothing is preventing it, just the springs seem a little soft), so I may investigate into extending the distance of the springs.
Otherwise bar running it out of fuel I am quite impressed in how smoothely the motor runs :).
