hey guys im in the process of buying another datsun and found one im keen on. question is will i need engineers cert for an A15 in a ute? last i heard biggest you ccould go was A14 without one. in Nsw. anyone shed some light on this??

yeah i know this but if i was to buy a ute with an a15 already in it and running would it need engineering in NSW?

Not sure on ya laws there , but here Melb, Ive had an A14 in my ute for 20yrs. Its been reg off and on for most of its life and up to 3 yrs ago when I last rego'd it , was never asked for engineers. Even now I presume if I re rego it they wouldnt ask me. So I presume your a15 had been rego'd before or was it put in after it was rego'd??

I thought that it only needed a engineers cert if it required any modifications to be made to fit the motor.

hey dat51k, yeh in nsw the law states something like, if it is more than a 15% increase then it needs to be engineered. So an A14 doesnt need engineering but an A15 does Im pretty sure. Thats prob why everyone has A14's haha

here it is:

Examples of minor (owner certified) modifications are:
􀂄 Engine changes where the capacity increase is less than 15% above the maximum size engine available for the
vehicle (providing no major structural modifications are necessary and where noise and/or exhaust emission
ADRs apply, all standard equipment such as carburettors, exhaust systems, exhaust gas recirculating valves,
oxygen sensors and catalytic convertors relating to noise and emission control are retained and operate
correctly).
􀂄 The fitting of a proprietary sunroof (if the modifications are of a minor nature only).
􀂄 Fitting a ‘package’ available as optional equipment for the vehicle (eg front disc brakes, power steering, alternative
transmission and bucket or bench seats).
􀂄 Additional lighting eg fog & driving lights.
􀂄 Alternative wheels and tyres within the owner certified limits set by the Authority (see Vehicle Standards
Information Sheet No. 9 Guidelines for alternative wheels & tyres).
􀂄 Fitting of handling enhancing suspension components such as roll stabiliser bars and up-rated shock absorbers.
Major modifications which fall outside the category of minor (owner certified) modifications require submission of
certification by an RTA recognised engineering signatory. This is usually in the form of an Engineering certificate
prepared by the signatory.

Well 15% is 1380cc on A12 so your Arithmetic is a bit out .. What I am saying, if the car was registered before all these laws come out with a A15 , you should be right. And A14's have different mounts, so that s structural ?

A12 is 1171cc. 15% increase is 1347 cc.

But governments don't operate on facts, rather on laws.
