They don't have removable bell housings. The front case may be swapped.

63-series is marginal behind a two-litre. Many owners have reported problems with them breaking. In my country they were only used 1977-1979 and all subsequent used the much much stronger 71 boxes.

Late 71B gearboxes used the adjustable gear shift lever (with an oval-shaped pivot)

As DatsAndy said, it won't be a 63. Bluebirds use long boxes. 63 is a short box from a Stanza. 63 is also smooth case, the Bluebird 71 is ribbed. So pretty easy to tell those ones apart.

I've got two 71b boxes here. allegedly they each came from an s3 bluebird, but I didn't remove them, so can only go on what I was told by the sellers at the time. both of them have CA71 (or is it CA71B) cast into the front bellhousing/casing section. I'll get a couple of pics up. I don't know much about them beyond that, esp not the ratios, but hope to have them in pieces (with an earlier 71b as well) side by side over teh xmas break, as I'm trying to suss out what models the kameari close ratio gearsets will fit (tehre's a few different types and I'm after their 'type a' set - link on request - which has wider but more evenly spaced ratios than their other set (and wide is a relative term, they are both considerably closer ratio spreads than any factory box)

They do have a removable front section/ bell housing and front cover so easily swapped over to suit L series CA series Engines Cant confirm they will work with SR but dont see why not.

All 80s blueys came with 71 series boxes and the borg warner 4 speed for the cheapo pov pack that resembles the escort mk2 box and corona starfire box of the same era.

All 71 boxes can be used for any front housing whether its b or c with slight mods to some of the bearings on the older B boxes unless its a late 71b box from looking at the Z forums. The 71c box internals seem to be exactly as the late B boxes. Could be many left over B case castings they had to get rid off??.
Better start with the late C boxes as they have the dual synchros on 2nd and 3rd in some of the models while all have 2nd dual synchros.

Heres some info on the ratios for future reference in case we the Kameari site goes down for some reason. Copied and pasted.

Either way 1500aud for a new input shaft/3 gears which converts our local boxes to a close ratio box with overdrive is a great deal that cant be matched by any other car make gearbox except the t5 world class box they sell any 5 ratios for 995usd!

The problem with it is our late model bluebirds don't 'properly' appear on that list. I'm thinking that probably the L series 'type a' gears from kameari will fit the l20 blueys. I suspect they'll maybe fit our ca20 series 3 blueys too, but can't be sure.

I do know one of the usa mobs (maybe kameari usa??) sells the type A set to suit 240 K boxes, so if I can't get it to fit either of the ca20 bluebird boxes I have, I've bought sikyne's spare 71b to suit. If I manage to find time this summer, I'll pull all of em down, and report back as to what the type A gears from kameari will and won't fit. I have a suspicion that although they'll fit the ca20 bluey box, the resulting ratios won't come out as per their list. I'll endeavour to find answers to all this this year.

I'm really hoping I can get a 71b together and achieve the ratio spread of their type A gearset. It gets a little confusing as they call it their type A and people might think it's to suit 71a boxes, but from what I can gather it's 71b boxes only.

I would go the 2.4 first gearset, my old A16 with a cam and 3.9 diff took off happily in 2nd gear and sometimes in 3rd with a few revvs and clutching.
Actually even my almost stock a12 took off in second gear with little effort.

Using a 4.785 rear and 2.4 on a relatively low profile race tyre will be more than fine on a lightweight 1200 with lots of go.

I would seriously go straight to the 71c box they are a better unit have a look at this shift mechanism available, its night and day to the B series ones & C ones on ebay or Japan made units on other sites.

71B's are competition proven even behind big bhp L28s.

71C are about 25% stronger, but having owned and tracked a couple of S13's and have plenty of mates also S13s, S14s and R32s, they need to be treated properly if you have 200rwkw or more. Short shifters are reknowned for killing boxes in Silvias and offer no performance benefit.

I had an Albins CR gearset in my old L18 1200 with the Stewart Wilkins engine. A mate had it made for his 1600 and we dropped the engine and box into my car after he rolled his 1600. Ratios were about 2.4, 1.6 from what I remember. Behind a grunty 1995cc L18 stroked with L20 crank that made 146rwbhp and shifted at ~6500rpm, and with a 4.3 diff and 195/60x14 tyre, it was a bit of a dog to get off the line...

We did standing start events at supersprints, hillclimbs and road rallies as above. On the racetrack the close 1-2-3 ratios were pretty irrelevant because you rarely go lower than 3rd anyway. But at hillclimbs, 1-2-3 are all you use. I took it back to Mt Cotton hillclimb with the new engine and CR box expecting big things with 30rwbhp more than before. But it was slower than my 116rwbhp junker engine and stock ratio stumpy skyline box. After that we took the CR box out and fitted my stumpy 71B with a 240Z cluster 2.9, 1.9 ratios and went back to the hillclimb. No other changes. 2 seconds faster. That's a big win for the cheap production gearset and cheap, easy to find diff ratio and cheap common tyre sizes. Sure you could make the expensive CR gearset work just as well if you tracked down a difficult to find and expensive 5.1 diff, but your top speed will be 20% lower as well. You don't need the gears that close unless you have an extremely peaky motor.

I have no idea what jmac is putting the gearbox in, what motor it's got, what the diff ratio is, or what type of events he's planning to do, but the best general advice is don't go too crazy with tall close ratio gearsets in my experience.

WIthout spilling the beans on everything, the test bed for it will have more torque than anything short of a no holds barred multivalve NA 2 litre, and will have it at somewhat lower rpms, I'm mainly looking to see how well they last behind that. I've got some vague ideas of rallying, or a while back was looking at 2 litre sports sedans and 'might' run a set in that guise (probably a series powered, maybe L series, or possibly sr20ve, which would probably mean I'd stop playing with 71bs anyway!- depending on what I can find time to do). I've currrently got a set of every ratio from 3.7 - 4.875 for h165 diffs too, so I've got a bit of options to play with.

I definitely appreciate the advice/feedback. The ratio set I'm looking at is the one with the 2.6ish first gear, which is more broadly speaking the wider ratio of the two. and it'll be running 13 in tyres, so a small break there with overall gearing. combine that with (potentially if needed) a 4.875 diff and it becomes more reasonable.
