I just reassembled my A15 with all of its emmissions. Had the cylinder head rebuilt and resurfaced. (1st mistake)Didn't measure the head thickness...so once I poured water into the radiator to check for leaks before putting antifreeze...water began to gush out by the front and rear dowels/ locating pins.
If the head has been resurfaced alot throughout its years...Should the dowels be reduced in length also?
I did torque the cylinder head as per 1982 factory specs.

sounds like you're the latest to fall for the old upside down headgasket trick...

No way...Made sure the water passages on the gasket matched block and cylinder head.

Is it upside down or the wrong way around?

Has happened to me before, more than once.

If the head is not seated properly you will notice this. Gaskets tend to crush to 1.0, 1.1mm.

Have never heard of dowels interfering.

Also have never heard of dowels interfering.

Did have a Felpro PS head gasket leak immediately once. Never had a problem with other gaskets.

Remove the head gasket and sit the head on the block, it should fit flush without the gasket, if it doesn't you will know its the dowels holding it up,I had this problem on an A12 that had had the block decked before I got it, had to machine 1mm off the dowles

Well took the head off yesterday...No distractions, no friends around, phone off...I was in the zone!
I was humbled and felt stupid when I saw the gasket installed wrong!
Thanks...L18_B110 ,Clyons8,and zabond

I've done the exact same thing. I put the head gasket on thinking it was on correctly, put the head on, torqued it up, and bolted manifold on etc, only thing left to do was put water in the radiator, then fire it up, only to my disgust that water was pissing out from the head.

At that moment I knew I had the gasket on upside down. So the next morning I pulled the head off, cleaned up both surfaces, got a new headgasket and triple checked that I had it on the right way up, and away I went, good as new.
