I was slightly put off by the cast block with the extra weight but on the other hand the vq uses lean burn technology so it would be a nightmare to try any sort of mods... But my intention was to get it past the engineering and blue slip and then turn it into a 3litre but use the 2litre block and I wouldn't think they would use cylinder liners with a cast block? I'd have to do some more research and see if that would be possible with vg.
And I do like the look of it in the engine bay, like it's almost ment to be there :)

with vg30e crank you get 2380cc
if you bore to 80mm you get 2503cc
that would be nice either way

Ah I was over complicating it all, I forgot the all have the same stroke :) thanks D. That is a much easier option

the vg20 has 69.5mm stroke crank 78mm bores the vg30 83mm stroke crank
and there are a number of rod and piston combos possible but so far found
the vg30 crank is not possible in the vg20 however with higher comp, pipes,
cams, springs, retainers and e85 alot more is possible.

Here is not for you cause you want to engineer it but with boost over 500hp
is possible with stock bottom meaning with worked upper probably rev to 8.5k
and make old ferrari dino v6 like performance with the right inlet.

The VQ20 and 30 have 73.3mm stroke that is why I was so keen on them, but the more I'm looking into changing anything on them the harder it seems to get, if they didn't run the lean burn tech it wouldn't be hard one at all..,

The VG20e is lighter than the VG30e
the VG30e weighs 340lbs with in and exhaust turbo manifolds
25lbs less without them so 315lbs, the VG20e is lighter than
the VG30e due to shorter engine, lower deck height and smaller
heads, crank, shorter pistons etc. around 40lbs lighter
thats around 280lbs for the VG20e without alternator/fly/clutch
the VQ30/35 weight the same with no alt/fly/clutch/exhaust manis
come exactly at 313lbs this is 30lbs heavier than vg20e.
The vg30e has been revved to 8300rpm in racing so the vg20e
could rev even higher thanks to its stroke and ligher internals
and better rod stroke ratio than vg30e.
They are some things to consider

I got hold of some manuals for the vq20, 30 & 35de and also came across a thread with ppl who have been doing the 35 gear into the 30 but having to use custom head gaskets to lift the heads to get piston clearance, the bearings in the mains are the same size between the 20, 30 & 35 only big end differences, the blocks are the same height it just seems to be the height of the gudgeon to the top of piston which is what will give me clearance... So custom pistons that have a vq20 diameter but not tall enough to hit the head and give a good comp ratio if possible??? Will find out in the next few days wether I can get a vq2?de

Eddies VG20 ute as pictured earlier was a ball tearer

http://www.datsuns.com/projects/eddiet.htm

The 20 was only used for setup and rego then a nice 30 was actually slotted in for the fun stuff
Was a nice car to drive and had great power
A nice developed car
When he moved back to UK I lost touch with the car so no idea where it is now

I guess I could do the same as the vq20 & 30 look exactly the same just the plastic covers are different, but I will be trying to go the earlier models as the later ones have the immobiliser built into the ECU, I can run the new engine on the old ECU but will lose the variable cam timing :( and will have to swap some of the new sensors for the old type.
