yep that sums up Mt Cotton hillclimb pretty well. It's a whole lot of fun, gets the adrenaline going and very challenging to get a good clean run in on that tight technical track. Hopefully the 120Y will be going around there at next month's hillclimb :)

last night's progress. Swapped vavletrain from old head to the reco head, and fitted to block. I was going to do the timing chain as well, but there's a welsch plug I need to fit in behind that and the Stagg jointing paste that I haven't used for about 12yrs has gone rock hard in the tube - you just can't rely on anything these days lol

well done on your class record with the soarer.Enjoyed the video.ur side mirror was almost taken out by a post lol.
what class is your soarer under?
Also what time are u aiming for with the 120y?
if u don't mind me asking how long have u been racing for? Soarers are heavy cars so breaking class records says alot about ur driving capabilities.

cheers

the camera actually hit that post on the first run lol You can see the post bend if you look closely. Good thing it's just a flimsy piece of platic designed not to damage cars.

The Soarer runs in their Production Road Registered class. Its only mods are exhaust and coilovers. Everything else is stock. It's faster than it's got any business to be really. The auto suits the hillclimb pretty well and it handles better than you'd imagine even though it weighs 1530kg and is a big old thing. It just works very nicely around the tight Mt Cotton track.

120Y goal is to go as fast as the Soarer, and my old L18 1200 coupe. It will be in the Modified Road Reg class. The record there is 46.6 I think, but it might never get that fast. The old CA18 coupe ran a best or 46.33. But that was too much of a handful. You could go that fast with alot less power. I don't know what power the turbo L20 is going to make, or really how it handles yet. But I reckon if it makes about 140rwbhp like the old 1200 did it should be able to run similar times to the Soarer. I know I can make it handle - it might just take some time to get it right. But for the first outing I have no set goals, just see how it works and hope nothing breaks!

I've been racing since 1999. I did my first track day with the Datsun Car Club at Lakeside in my L16 twin SU 1200 coupe. I wasn't very good, but I was totally hooked. mid 2001 Lakeside went bust and closed. I joined a CAMS club and went to Mt Cotton. It was scary and awesome all at once. From then on I did dirt autcrosses, khanacrosses, motorkhanas... every kind of event I could as often as I could through 2001 and 2002. Thats when my driving really improved and I learnt car control which makes you much more confident and fast. Since then I've just done sprints really, apart from a breif dabble with rallying in 2004. From 2005 to 2007 I only did one or two sprints a year, but then Lakeside re-opened in 2008 and that really got me back into motorsport. And I've been broke ever since! lol

I've just dropped it in and and stopped for lunch. Battery is on charge. Still need to bolt on turbo, exhaust, starter, radiator, and connect all the wiring and fuel... so another couple of hours this arvo and it should be back to life :)

back in action and test drive was all good, as it would want to be with a reco turbo and rebuilt engine! I'll drive it over to a mate's place tomorrow after work to fix the exhaust - the hangers need a bit of tweaking Then I'll book it in for the mod plate to make it all legal.

took some video tonight after fixing the exhaust at Nevs, but he didn't have one of the mounts we needed so it's temporarily bolted up at the back and all you can hear is a rattle/vibration due to that solid mount. I'll sort it out tomorrow and get some video then.

Also found the first teething problem - inlet pipe from turbo to inlet manifold blows off after just a couple of sec at 9psi lol. I'll rework that so it bolts on at the manifold end.

Absolutely no hint of pinging yet with 25deg timing all in. So that's going very well.

Had to take a pic of Nevs fat Zed while I was over there. The big wing isn't really my cup of tea, but it's for function not looks. Its an insanely fast track car. 4100cc straight 6 with homemade twin throttle body injection, home ported head, homemade extractors etc pumps out over 250rwbhp and even more epic torque
