i have got a sunny that has had some work done to the suspension. lowered kingsprings and heavy duty gas shocks. nothing special but it made a big difference to the handeling and is very predictable now.

it was still understeering a bit when swinging into corners so i removed the sway bar of the stanza that is sitting in the back yard and about ten miutes later when flying out of the drive way to test it.

the car stays very flat now and does not hesitate at all when swinging into corners and is extremly predictable now on tarmace and gravel.

im am worried that when i put the L20B in and 5speed that it will un balance the car to return to understeer(because the engine and box are heavier). will this be the case?

any help would be great.

i would have to agree with that supposition.

The weight increase over the forward half of the car is going to increase the front half's inertia. ie want to keep going in a forward direction.
To offset this you'll want to beef up the front suspension i suppose. Thicker anti roll bar on the front will keep more front rubber on the ground. Unfortunantly then you'll start getting less absorbtion of bumps etc too.

It's all a balance. countering differences in weight between the front and rear with suspension tweaking is never going to be as good as an already balanced car.
It's why when Ford took the Focus rallying they relocated the box into the tunnel, where it is in a traditional North/South set up.
Helped to give them a 50/50 weight distribution between front and back.

But those sort of mods are pretty fully on so people like you and me talk to suspensions shops instead!

Having said all that i'm no suspensions guru. Still learning.
Any contradiciton of what i said would be welcome.

matt.

To keep the balance, when you fit the L20B, move the battery to the rear of the car. It should balance out.

Hey bro, how did you install the rear sway bar? did you use links on the ends? or clamped (ends)it to the springs?(assuming the bar got clamped to the axle, some instalations are reversed, bar clamped to body, links to axle)

dont worry "hop" i wish i could aford a perfectly balanced car as well.

dtasun are heaps of fun and i think im doing alright to have a pretty good handleing car and im only 17, hope to have the new engine in within the two months or so, just have too finish ripping all the donor parts of the stanza in the back yard

i will put the battery in the boot i hadnt thought of that thanks.

the rear sway bar is off a stanza and it bolted straight on( to a sunny that is). it attched to the lower control arms on the back end, if you going to do make sure you get the braket that is bolted to the lower control arm, it stops the sway bar from moving backwards and forwards.

Well your doing a hell of a lot better than me mate.
My front end handles beautifully but the back end is a sack of crap.
Skips and twitches over any kind of irregularities in the surface.
Understandable with a leaf/live axle combo though.

Contemplating some links to attempt and improvement.
See how i go. Need to buy a decent MIG.

Let us know how the car changes with the heavier set up in the front.

heres a pic of how i did my 1200 rear sway bar if thats wat u were after jaimecidpedro. sorry there so big. i drilled into the rail to fix the 'L' mount. then used U bolts around the diff... only problem is the U bolts slide around the spline when you drive it so the plates need to be tack welded to the diff Open in new window

Ahh, another Sunny owner going L series!
Top stuff!
Just fixing the bodywork on my sedan, to get it on the road.
Then comes the L16 or L18 with Stanza SSS 5-speed & Gazelle rear end.
Should be a heap of fun even on my tight budget...

datfunboy's B310 has a coil-spring rear suspension, plus it's 20% heavier than the B110, so you get better ride quality.
