...are we meant to have alloy heads? The head appears to be the 71-73 pre emmisions round port head (no label) and it's all shiny & a magnet doesn't stick to it. It indeed it's colour looks just like the head off my VR4 (except 1/2 the size) and it weighs next to nothing. Am I nuts? I thought these engines had iron heads?

Now more interesting question. For street legallity reasons (pre-emmisions), is it possible to machine out the A12 block to fit a A14 crank/rods & E15et pistons? If the engine is pre-emmisions I can get the supercharger street legal way easier.

With the dizzy & hence cam being slightly different, is that an issue?

I assume using the A14 head would be the go, unsure of it's type yet.

Thoughts?

Hi Ash - yep alloy heads for the A-series. Must be a nice surprise if you were expecting a cast iron head. You can machine the A14 crank and rods to fit the A12 block but you're going to be lucky to bore it out enough to accept the E15 piston. The A12a blocks have a little more meat in them. You may be better getting an A15 block as a starting point.

I have an A14 block already, but it's after 1975 hence I need a charcoal canaster & other emmisions crap to legally register the car. I'm trying to get away without that crap.

get a 1974 a12 120y type block then, pre 74 auhgust or 1976 july are the killer dates. also as long as the car is pre aug 74, makes it a lot easier

Don't the emission requirements relate to the model of the car, & not the engine, or is it whichever is the newer?

The A14 crank can be fitted to the A12 block with a little lathe work on the crank & some other minor mods.
I am doing this with my engine & there is one running around here in a 1200 coupe.
A15 pistons will provide streetable compression. The crowns on these are meaty enough to stand a little machining for compression reduction. The bowl is offset in these, so it can be enlarged quite a bit by making it concentric.

whichever is newer

try putting the e15t head on while your there!

i've seen NA e15 heads on a12s before, seems a bloody good conversion to me

gives OHC and cross flow

The car & A12 are 1973, the A14 is obviously older.

I was thinking about the E15 conversion, using a whole E15ET though. Might be worth picking a blown one up to compare...

an OHC, EFI, supercharged AE15 hybrid would be sweet...
