Yep, a spool is the answer, just as long as everyone else has to run them!
Anyone got a 4.9:1 CWP for an RS H190? I believe the 720 ute one will do me just fine....

Maybe I do. A mate of mine has a 720 ute rolling chasis lying around that he's itching to get rid of.

Sorry for the resurrection of a 6 year old thread, but some people may find this a useful read.
Had a good read of this and I have to say I'm still confused as to whether it's worth it or not.
Anyway I have a welded centre in at the moment and will have to find out the hard way, I guess the one thing that can be drawn from this is that they can be trouble for those who do not know how to drive them.
I'll let you know how it goes just waiting on a tailshaft to come back and we're all systems go....

seems to be a bit of controversy in this thread lol..
Im just going to speak from personal experiance.. i have had around 5 cars that have had locked diffs, all when i was younger, all street driven on a daily basis and i wouldnt do it again.
Despite what everyone says, they do wear your tyres, are dangerous in the wet, regardless of driver skill... snap axles, puts massive load on bearings/bushes/wheel studs etc and are generally a pain in the arse to drive around town! If its just a weekend hack then you could probably deal with it, but for something i drive on the road give me an open center anyday (or LSD if funds permit)
And have you ever tried pushing a car with a locked diff off the road? lol its no fun

Ive welded a front diff in a friends old hack 4wd. (80s Navara) Its fine when out of 4wd, but once the hubs are in its an animal to control. You get great traction up front, but its only usable when you are in low 1st gear crawling. Any more pace then that, and it becomes unpredictable offroad.
I hvent driven one in a street car, but im not sold on the reasons to do it. I think ill either keep the open centre or go the LSD option. Just my experince.

Yeah I guess people can argue that it is predictable but only beacause it has only one stage: locked (as opposed to an open centre which can spin both axles or just the one). An open centre can be unpredictable but not in normal driving situations so I guess it's the standard for that very reason.
But of all the people I have asked this is the general response, about half say go for it and the other say stay away, beware etc. So I'm going to try it to see what it's all about, personally I'm not sold to the idea but it's all I could get around here to replace the diff centre I blew. Following that a spare open centre will arrive and I'll probably use that instead.

I had a locked diff for a while on the street, and while it does give great traction, it was a total pain in day to day driving, reverse parking going around corners etc, in the end I used to leave it at home and walk if I didnt have far to go.

I dunno what I may have said in this thread 6 years ago, (I'm too lazy to go back over it) But I've just fitted a 4.4:1 locker to my 1200 quite recently. (For drag racing/burnouts) It really is a complete pig on the street. After the next drag meeting (next weekend) I'm going to rip it out, and refit my spring loaded locker. While it isn't a tractive as a locker, it's 10,000 times more enjoyable on the street.

i think he is talking about a genuine "detroit locker" basically acts as a locker when driving straight, then unlocks whilst turning Here
