Yeah why not.....as long as you follow the trend with huge KW mudflaps , exhaust stacks up through the rear tray, air horns on the roof and get yourself a truckers hat it'll be a winner

Strange hissing sound under the bonnet was the battery boiling.

Alternator was charging at over 18 volts with the terminals on and over 29 with terminals disconnected and car running (very rough)

what have ppl done recently - every where i turn these alternators are rare and cost over $450 new

That's not the alternator it's the regulator not working right (it is supposed to control the current through the rotor to regulate output voltage). Is it external reg or internal? I think I have a spare external one somewhere if you're not in a hurry (I'd have to find it first).

being the CA18 it has the reg in the alternator. i took it to an auto elec who also said that the wiring was also scorched so it's out with the whole thing - not taking the chance of repairing it an have another bit go.

Must be the time for alternators to go. Mine just went in my SV6 Commonwhore wagon , bursons Quoted $1300 for a Genuine replacement of the 140amp unit that was on that model.
Ended up getting a non Genuine one for $360 from an Auto elec.

Alternator arrived yesterday. In and charging at 14.4 volts.
I think the old one set off some electrical problems.
The windscreen wipers won't turn off until they blow a fuse.
I can't get it out of park by putting my foot on the brake.

I hate electics

Fixed the wipers always on problem .... Replaced the control box - it must have been fried when the alternator was putting out 29 volts.

Still can't get it out of park without pushing the manual release thing in front of the shift stick. Normally it releases when you put your foot on the brake.
Also the Cruise control stopped working
and one of the fuses keeps blowing but the wiring colour doesnt match the S13 manual
I am thinking that the control boxes all got a voltage hit

did I mention I hate electrics?
