I finally solved the last bit of gasoline smell in my car. It was a leaking main jet plug on the bottom of the carb.
It got bad enough that the fuel was leaking out overnight, causing a difficult start. I decided to fix that and now the fumes are all gone during normal driving too. Apparently it was dripping all the time while I was driving.
Leaking Jet PlugTo summarize what I had to do to get rid of the fumes in my 1200:
1. Replace cracked/disfigured hoses at fuel filter (was leaking)
2. Tighten fuel line clamps
3. Tighten fitting on fuel pump (was leaking)
4. Replace section of hose under car near the fuel tank (slight seeping leak)
5. Replace the cracked rocker cover breather hose (fumes coming into cabin through cowl vent)
6. Replaced the ventilation flow control valve. Mine was sticking. I suppose soaking it in carb cleaner, then washing with alcohol (starting fluid) might fix the old one
7. Get genuine 1200 filler cap (and new packing seal). The B210 cap was letting fuel go out and discoloring the side of car while I drove. Not every day but every once in a while this happened
8. Tighten one main jet plug on carburetor (petrol leak)
I also lightly tightened up the many screws on the stock fuel pump cover, dunno if that helped or not but seemed like a good idea.
