I'm getting fumes in the cabin of my ute, does anyone know where they might be coming from. I have new door rubbers, Ive sealed all holes in the firewall, the previous owner cut holes in the back for 6x9's but i have have them welded up. I have had the ute since december and it has been fine up until the last month or so.

May sound silly but have you checked the heater hoses and behind the seats also the vents behind the bonnet under the windscreen .

Is it petrol fumes or exhaust fumes?

Get under the vehicle and sniff around all the fuel lines, there may be a spot of fuel seeping out somewhere.

if your running a cover on the tray and your tailgate seals are crap, your fumes may be coming from the exhaust into the tray and through the vents on the cabin back wall between the seats. just an option, same happened to me. try taking the cover off for a few days and see if any change.

I am sure the fuel filler tube runs through the tray cavity which is part of the stale air vents, if you have fuel seeping from filler pipe in the tray cavity, this my be causing the problem.

I recently solved the fumes problem in my 1200! My clothes smelled like gasoline after a drive ...

It turned out to be the hose that runs from the air cleaner housing to the valve cover. The 1971-1973 Datsun 1200s vent the gas tank to the engine ... so the gasoline smell can come out of the valve cover and right in the cabin vents at the base of the windshield. I fashioned a new hose, no leaks at it's much nicer to drive now.

Problem will be the exhaust outlet. It probably does not exit out behind the back of the ute far enough and the fumes are getting sucked in through the tailgate and in through the vents in the back of the cabin. Take the tarp off and the problem will be temporarily solved. Permanent solution is to dump your exhaust further out the back, downwards or out the side to keep the fumes away from your tailgate.

I finally solved the last bit of gasoline smell in my car. It was a leaking main jet plug on the bottom of the carb.

It got bad enough that the fuel was leaking out overnight, causing a difficult start. I decided to fix that and now the fumes are all gone during normal driving too. Apparently it was dripping all the time while I was driving.

Leaking Jet Plug

To summarize what I had to do to get rid of the fumes in my 1200:
1. Replace cracked/disfigured hoses at fuel filter (was leaking)
2. Tighten fuel line clamps
3. Tighten fitting on fuel pump (was leaking)
4. Replace section of hose under car near the fuel tank (slight seeping leak)
5. Replace the cracked rocker cover breather hose (fumes coming into cabin through cowl vent)
6. Replaced the ventilation flow control valve. Mine was sticking. I suppose soaking it in carb cleaner, then washing with alcohol (starting fluid) might fix the old one
7. Get genuine 1200 filler cap (and new packing seal). The B210 cap was letting fuel go out and discoloring the side of car while I drove. Not every day but every once in a while this happened
8. Tighten one main jet plug on carburetor (petrol leak)

I also lightly tightened up the many screws on the stock fuel pump cover, dunno if that helped or not but seemed like a good idea.
