Just wondering how to fix this slight problem. When turning on the right angle (usually reverse out of driveway or fast turns or pot holes) the front tyres rub the inside of the wheel arch back towards the firewall. (13" rims)

Also now I have slightly wider tyres 175/70 over 165/75 and now the back rubs the edge of the rear guard especially with a full car, however i think just bending over the lip should solve this.

thanks
edit: sry i meant 165/75 not 165/70 and 175/70 not 175/75

i think your enemy could be the tyre profile

as 175/75 is a fair bit taller than 165/70

about 30mm taller if im right....

Front....find out exactly where it's rubbing and tap it back with a hammer until it doesn't rub anymore ( shouldn't be much ).
Rear.... Your right rolling the guards will fix it I suggest getting a piece of steel pipe ( make sure it is bigger than the gap between the wheel and wheel arch then get a mate to hold it in front of the wheel so when you reverse it rolls over the wheel and rolls the lip as it goes round the wheel .Oh yeah and tyre size could be a factor of course.
I've used this method on heaps of cars for 2 reasons 1 It's free 2 It makes a smmoth fold and it also works if you want smooth flared guards.
Hope this helps

Of course, you could always address the ACTUAL problem, instead of trying to fix the symptoms.

Like Ange wrote, you have the wrong tyre. The best size to mount on the front for most sporty Datsun 1200's & 1000's with 13" rims is 185x60x13" The inflated diameter is almost exactly the same diameter as the original 12" tyre, so the front end stays low, & if the wheel offset is anywhere near correct, then nothing hits, anywhere, even with mild lowering. These tyres are the correct size for rims from 5" to 6" wide, & my [now] obsolete Pirelli P6's were not only affordable, but stuck to the road like sh1# to a blanket.

195x60x13" seems to be a popular size for rears, but i managed to get away with 205x60x13 on the rear of my 1000 sedan.

I used to use a 185/60/13 as a front tyre and a 205/60/13 as a rear on my 1200 ute. These fitted sweet on a 6" rim and I had no problems with scrubbing. The overall rolling diameter of the tyre is what you need to be concerned with, so the tyre dimensions above should fix your problem as they come in very close to the originals supplied by Nissan/Datsun. Go to this Tyre Site which will help you calculate your overall diameter.

YEah, I got 185/60/13's on mine. It made the car a bit lower as well cuz the original 165's were 70 profile. I havnt had a rub yet........

(assuming this is the other side of the foot-well) thats probably because of the wider tyres. just use a hammer, like everyone else, and give yourself and passenger a little bit less foot room for the noise. or possibly space the steering out so that the wheels don't turn as far. cuts down the turning circle, but hey, the turning circles that tight anyway... (I haven't looked into this, a mate suggested it to me)

I have 195/60/r14's on my ute, front and rear. the "flare" on each fender has been trimmed (so minor you wouldn't notice) at the front to let them fit. other than that, they rub with the wheels nearly at full lock. (thats the only time, but i generally don't reverse fast)
The only problem i have is the front wheels hitting the top of the fender... getting flares soon (this arvo, fingers crossed)

I get more rubbing than the local rub and tug. I have 17'' rims with 40-205-17 rubber. On the front there is pretty much no escaping rub on the inside. I may roll the guard soon though.

So what is the best size wheel to put on a 1200?

I am looking for wheels at the moment for my 1200 Ute and I was thinking of either 14's or 15's because of a larger range of tyres available in those sizes with the lower profiles. If it is still going to cause rubbing issues then I will stick to 13's.

What are peoples thoughts?

Basically that's up to personal opinion. I choose 15" because It was easiest to tub the back end with the choice of tyres. But be aware that the 15" front profile tyre is hard to get. I'm running a 165/50 on a 4" rim at the front, but they are hard to find. However, Falken still do it but there are expensive. For me the 17" rims make the car look to tall and you can't dump it to the floor. As you can see on my avatar, which is the actual profile of my ute, that I can dump it as far as I want thanks to air bag suspension. The 295/50's on the rear really give it a sweet look and keeps the car in the old Skool style, like a hot rod. That's the look I was after, but the more modern look is to go with the 17" rims.
