what does it cost roughly to get a head/block/both shaved... I'm thinkin my headgasket is blown, there's milky oil coming out the crankcase breather now and it misses and runs like 5hit at anything above idle.

doesn't sound good mate!
to plane a head at a machine shop like ours would probably only cost $50 or so.
to get it done at an engine reconditioners would probably be a set price, and probably quite a bit more than $50. Generally they charge like wounded bulls.

OK I got a gasket kit ( $155 ) and started pulling the head off, but I cant get the inlet/exhaust manifolds off, it looks like they've been put on recently with stag paste. Any ideas on getting them off?
I thought maybe pour hot water over them?

Leave the manifolds and carby on. Just pull it off together if you are only changing head gasket.

I would leave them on, but the extractors are welded to the exhaust pipe.

Ok call me an idiot but I was having a look at another set of extractors today and realised that there are bolts on the underside too.

So i took them out and pulled the head off: and all seemed okay just the back cylinder was full of water...
