I would say... put in an A14 with a weber carb, and a header (extractor). And if you have any $$$ left try a hot-rod cam. This makes a fairly quick car, quick enough to outrun a 99+ Civic Si (don't ask how I know).

Actually, you said "chep", but that's not important now...

Anywhere from $300-1000 depending on how much you get used and how much you get new.

Let's start again. How much do you have/want to spend?

By far the "easiest and cheapest" way is to put an A14 or A15 in. It's easy, just a little fiddling with motor mounts. It's cheap if you have access to these engines, for example, buy a rusted out car where the engine is still good.

The A15 doesn't have a lot more peak horsepower, but has noticeably more average horsepower (flatter torque curve).

To get more power from your car with no money involves either incredible luck, or illegal activity.

Staying with the A series means lower ongoing costs, little if any conversion costs and you can upgrade in a stepwise method.

Eg.
1. Upgrade A12 to 2nd hand A14 ...EU$150
2. Get 2nd hand 40DCOE webers ...EU$250
3. Get 2nd hand cam ..EU$200
4. Get a 5 speed ..EU$300
or
Get lucky and get a complete engine with all of the above already installed. EU..$500-600

The advantage of the A14 upgrades is that the electricals and cooling are identical to what you already have.

Chris.

Probably the least expensive upgrade to an A12 engine, with the biggest power change, is to fit a larger carburetor. It won't make your car very much faster, but the engine will feel better at high rpm. The stock carburetor is quite small, designed for fuel economy.

You would need:

- bigger carb
- adapter plate
- throttle linkage or cable modification

An example is a Weber 32/36 carb.

To improve the 1200 highway driving experience, I would second changing to a 5-speed. If you drive at 90 k/s or more, this is far more useful than extra horsepower. It will make the car more comfortable to drive and the engine last longer

when it comes to adding power it costs money. stop and think about it, the A12 is putting out almost 1 hp. per cu. in. sae. in other words 69 hp. out of 71.5 cu. in. that's a fairly good power to displacement ratio for an early 70's car. getting more than that is going to cost you some money. there are things that you can do to a stock motor that will help, but remember the old saying used by racers for years "there's no substitute for cubic inches".
the least expensive way to go is flat top pistons if you don't already have them, a higher lift camshaft, and raising the compression ratio by either changing the head or shaving the head you now have.
any way you go, it will cost something.
