Hi, Guys

What is the effect on fixing a Turbo Charger on general fuel consumption , what will be the difference that can run by a fuel Liter with turbo and without turbo

Thanks
Regards
Sumith

Not sure on the exact MPG figure, but it all depends on how heavy your right foot is!

Under normal driving conditions there is not much difference, but as soon as you hit boost it is a bit thirstier, and a hell of a lot of fun !

As the purpose of a turbo is to give more performance I think it wouldnt be hard to double the consumption of fuel over a stock motor.

in motorsport they multiply the engine capacity by 1.7 to achieve a new capacity rating

i would assume this is based on some research and that by making some large assumption you could assume to have the fuel consumption of a motor 1.7 times the size of your current motor

at least that will give ya a rough guesstimate

I'm to be corrected, but I think Nissan Specs the A14 motor to consume 12l\100km at a nominal 48Kw on the wheels, in traffic and town.... coming down to about 7l\100km for highway driving....

I'm getting 120~130Kw on the wheels at 14PSI and I'm on 13.2l\100Km for traffic driving and 11.3l\100km on the open road.

I did a 20Km test a while back at a constant 180Km\h giving me 14.9l\100km...

just goes to show what aerodynamics, or the lack there-of, in our case, does to ones fuel consumption

Some specs on the 1400 Ute SOuth African version.

So I think, doubling the power and the fun for an extra 1.3 something liters of fuel.... hmmm can live with that....

off load little difference, remember compression = fuel economy
under full load it will make more power therefore use more fuel

The impact of a turbo on fuel economy is that while it is true that on the boost the turbo uses more fuel than off boost the turbo engined car is able to use a smaller engine. This allows the car to get better fuel economy during steady-state operation and still have enough power for climbing hills and passing. The increased cylinder pressure affords a great deal of extra torque at a given engine size. The reason in my opinion that these engines have not become more popular in the US is that you have to drive the car like you are mad at it a bit. The big lumpy V-8 just gets along the turbo requires a bit of RPM and spooling up.

Yes. Theoretically a turbo increases efficiency. So if tuned correctly and you drive it to the same level of performance, you'll get better fuel economy. This is based on two key principles:
* Turbo increases engine efficiency
* For a given level of performance, you use the same HP and fuel usage (turbo or not)

Now in reality, most home-fitted or aftermarket turbo conversions don't have a well tuned carburetor, so economy suffers. EFI is easier to calibrate for the different engine tuning, but many EFI conversions are not setup optimally. So economy suffers.

Ultimately, almost every one drives their turbo car faster and harder then before turbo. Since the car is being accelerated faster, more fuel is used. This is not the turbo's fault, and the same phenomenon happens when people fit bigger carbs, or just a bigger engine.

Any time you reduce static comp ratio, you decrease economy.

Although technically driven sedately the addition of a turbo shouldn't be a detriment - I dare you to find one person on the planet who has fitted a turbo and then doesn't drive it hard most of the time, to the point the economy isn't worth writing home about.

Another angle to consider - with typical 4sp and either the 3.9 or 4.1 diff - relatively the motor is screaming at highway cruise (esp if you sit on or in some people's cases over, the posted limit). If you hypothetically swapped in 3.7 or even 3.5ish diff gears, the reduction in freeway rpms for any given roadspeed will likely give you a 5% improvement in fuel economy. Since the engine is boosted, it'll have far far more torque on tap and the change in diff gearing still means more torque at the wheels. You could even go further and say that it's hard to get max boost in first gear, you flash to redline and don't use it. Will taller gearing, you spend more time in first, spool the turbo, and actually get to 'use' some of first gear with decent boost, and believe it or not (and turbos are the sole exception here, it doesn't apply to supercharging which has to lag or spoolup issues, never has never will) you can end up with a car that is quicker 0-100km/h with 3.7 gears and turbo than with 4.1 gears and turbo. Of course it's all application dependant, but the above scenario is indeed possible.

or dynamic compression
the only way you will end up with better economy all the time is to fit a tiny weenie turbo
my gtr get 12 l/100k's if i'm good
or 12ks/100l if i'm bad, but it feels so awesome you just gotta do it
the hard part is the self control
