It may be slightly off the datsun subject but I was wondering if some of you have engines (eg. SR20) that have variable valve timing.
If so how does it compare to something similar.

Similarly has anyone seen or heard some of the new engines (generally BMW, SAAB) that have variable valve timing, variable valve lift, adjustable displacement and
variable inlet manifold lengths. I know the V-TEC sounds good when given a caining and I would expect these would sound equally good (if in a 1200 of coarse)

And yes SAAB is 1 of the leaders in engine technology for cars anyway. Go figure.

Or what about a V8.

I know it may be a sin but I was behind a new Jaguar the other night when the driver decided to have some fun. I do like a 4 cylinder reving but you can't beat the sound of
a nice V8, especially if it is a modern European V8.

Gday, I've read about two interesting engine developments on www.autospeed.com , one was an engine with variable compression ratio, which it achieved by having a head which tilted on
the block somehow. The other was an valveless engine which had virtually unlimited 'lift and duration' i think it was an audi.
Autospeed has alot of interesting technical articles about new developments and technology, I'm a subscriber and I can highly recommend it.

James.

there is another that moves the block to modify the stroke. I have actually seen a valveless engine but it was different to what you are talking about. If only they allowed motor
sport in OZ to use these developements, we might see some decent hp cars from the factories.

Hey Tim and company (Dimlight A2dubnut),

I know you guys are always thinking about new engine swaps for the 1200. I actually got a good look at a partially stripped VG30 in a 300ZX. That thing should fit in the 1200 easily! It looks
like the motor mounts would have to be shaved off the 1200 crossmember and brought forward a bit. The exhaust is another thing, it has a crossover that travels behind the engine creating
barely any room to the rear so the exhaust would have to be re-done (of course). I have checked out the VG30ET (turbo Z) motor and the turbo mounts on the drivers side of the engine. I guess
you would have to have the stupid crossover pipe to run to the turbo unless something else can be figured out. Maybe you could grab another turbo for a 300ZX and mount it to the passenger
side manifold...Twin turbo VG30 sounds nice! You'd have to add more fuel (big deal!) the good thing about that is the passenger side has more room (no steering box) for the turbo. You also
might be forced to re-do the single turbo to mount on the passenger side because of the steering box/master cylinders. Anyways, food for thought. I think it would be awesome to put the VG30
in (160 hp?), but turbo would be best (200+ hp) if it could be worked out. Talk to you guys later!!!

Hey Andy - good thinking but the SR20DET fits much easier, will make more power and also allows you
to go around corners!
Check out Dave Lums work at http://www.datsuns.com/projects/1200/index.htm

My VG30DE has NVCS - an early adaptation of Nissan variable valve timing. How does it compare to something similar?

The closest information I have for that is also a comprison of VG30E to VG30DE (4v/cyl vs 2v/cyl) on this page:
http://www.datsuns.com/Tech/ohv_vs_ohc.htm
and specifically
http://www.datsuns.com/Tech/sohc-vs-dohc-tq.gif
A little more than half way down the page you'll see a dyno chart. Note that at every RPM the DE makes more torque, even though they both isplace 3.0L. How much of the spread is due to
NVCS as opposed to just plain better flowing heads I do not know. Do notice the torque jump at 4250rpm - I bet the DE is changing cam timing right at the point, as it makes a jump right as
the SHC engine is falling off.

I hope this is useful in some fashion...

My project is currently on hold pending further development of our 510. Probably next year before
anything happens on it.

Andy, sorry I took so long to reply. I think the VG30 would fit rather nicely too. In fact, I just made a deal of sorts to start that project in the Chickenhawk. The way I envision the
turbo, would put it/them in front of the engine (a la Buick's Grand National). I don't know about fitment, but that seems to be a good location to me. I'll probably go with natural
aspiration for traction sake to begin with. I hope that I can get something together before the next Tens_and_Twenties Car Club meet in the spring. I'll keep everyone posted on this
bit of silliness. Have a day. Tim
