Im tryin to fing some info on gallery plugging in the h89 head. Ive read in old threads that people have plugged water galleries to the manifold to save the hassle of a wet inlet manifold.

How much can be drilled out in order to tap a thread?
Where do can i buy these screws?

Another suggestion I was given was to use a plumbing filler, even though its heat resistant and strong enough to be tapped, plugging sound safer.

Any input would be great.

cheers

If your manifold comes down over the water ports, you don't have to plug the water holes. You can just bolt it up.

I removed the old gasket, and saw the water holes. It had not leaked.

When I fitted a new gasket, it was a wet type. I used RTV silicone sealer. Works a treat. After fitting the intake/exhaust gasket, before fitting the intake manifold put a button of goo in the water ports, let it tack up slightly before fitting the intake.

You can buy grub screws in many places, most auto shops for example. Measure the hole, tap the mext mm up and screw in a plug. A bit of form-a-gasket or something to seal the thread would help prevent corrosion. DD's method will also work.

When I removed the manifold later, it seems it sealed quite well

easy way to seal it, but coolant leaks out when you pull the manifold, except one stayed in. Maybe put some grease on the intake, will keep it from pulling the plugs out.

In the motorsports catalog there used to listed a stud and plug kit..............it was for fitting side draughts, you simply tapped the head and put in the flush mount plugs. The plugs are 10 mm x 6 mm deep (I think) socket head.

Found it in my 1984 Nissan Competition catalog:

Quote:
99996-H1140 INTAKE MANIFOLD
99996-H1149 STUD & PLUG KIT Required when installing 99996-H1140

No photo but your description is clear.

Thanks guys this stuff really helped, ill have to hit the stores and track down some grub screws of a similiar size. knowing that its a process nissan suggests gives me piece of mind. I was worried about opening the hole a bit and cutting into something i shouldnt.

Will plugging these holes increase engine performance? My A15 head is not plugged at the moment.
