can someone help me figure out whether an early tach is defective or not?

can someone tell me the difference of these tachomters. I have this early type but the 12V wire is on top of the ground. the picture below shows that the 12V wire is at the bottom part.

The black/white wire needs to be spliced into the black/white wire from the fuse box. Cut the dash wire, fit spade connectors, and plug it into the tachometer.
