Bike helmets are fine as long as they meet aus standards (keep that crap sticker on). They're untested for Hans device mods so if you're going in depth you'll need a cams approved one from their list.

Aus standards are aus standards. Might be slightly better than my aldi special but they all meet the aus standards.

Helmets that meet AS1698, for CAMS purposes, are classifed as having a lower fire protection level and usually require you to wear a fireproof balaclava underneath. This combo is allowed in most forms of motorsport in Australia.
Check the CAMS Schedule D it contains all the info you need regarding apparel.

If your thinking about competing for the next few years as opposed to a "one off" I suggest you buy something that is approved for the Hans device posts, you can,t just screw them into any helmet the helmet must be designed to take them. The hot poop is that they will be compulsory very soon for all forms of motor racing. There have been several cases where guys have screwed the posts in to non compliant helmets and been sent home at scrutiny. You can no longer race at Q.R. or Lakeside without a Hans equipped helmet.Thought i,d better jump in and maybe save you some cash. Cheers

That's good advice for head to head circuit racing. But HANS devices are only safe to use in cars with rollcages. If you are just doing trackdays, sprints or hillclimbs in a road car, a normal Aus Stds helmet is fine, and no balaclava is needed.

Yeah your right Harry, but the powers that be at CAMS have indicated there is a STRONG chance they will be mandated for ALL forms of the sport very very soon! The added cost will drive lots of folk away...ie. new helmet and device and who knows what time frame they will give us to comply. So as I stated,if in doulbt grab an RPM with post provisions if you have the cash,I think they are the cheapest at present. The argument is not mine but merely giving those the heads up on whats being kicked around at the various cams panels.Make of it what you will.

no doubt mandatory use of HANS devices in circuit racing will filter down to all levels of circuit racing. It always does with safety regs - like window nets etc did. As you said, QR have already made it a requirement for races at Lakeside next year. They can move faster than CAMS because they're basically a one man show rather than a beauracracy, and the fact that there's a quid in it for them doesn't hurt either...

But just like window nets (and other things) they won't/can't make it mandatory for road cars doing sprints regardless of what over-officious State Panel members might be discussing. To do so they would have to force road registered cars to fit a safety cage (illegal for road use now under NCOP), race seat, harness as a minimum to make the use of a HANS device possible. Basically they'd be removing all the sensible provisions for road cars from their regulations.

but I see he's got a caged race car build happening, so your advice is spot on - get a HANS compatible helmet.

Yeah agree with the guys comments.
Three things I refused to go cheap on.
Roll cage was professionally build.
New helmet, best I could afford and HANS device.

Looking at spending around $600~800 mark and want something that won't brake if I stack and it smashes into my cage! So a Hans helmet it is where's the best place in Melbourne Vic to find something like this?
