I noticed you've modified "impossible" to "challenging" with reference to the Mazda head conversion, I am still in the midst of carrying out this conversion and its progressing well, the major hold up as always is a lack of funds.

I envisage completion within the next 3-4 months at which time I would be happy to write an article for the tech section, assuming of course no one beats me to the punch.

Hope it works out well. It sounds like a fun project. I figured "challenging" would be more encouraging.

Cool article, thanks!

Nice to have the engine weights listed, maybe some hp@rpm and torque@rpm is next step?

Keep it up!

I notice the all alloy SR20 is listed as one of the heaviest motors. And the L as relatively light.

and the L and CA the same weight? I have seen L and CA blocks and would be surprised if the CA isn't significantly lighter. It's cast iron block is much shorter than a L series. Also both turbo versions of CA and SR are exactly 10kg heavier than their naturally aspirated versions which is a bit dubvious

the reference sites listed have conflicting weight specs for the L series motors at least. I didn't really check the other engine weights

I'm not bagging this, it's good that you went to the effort to put this together, but unfortunately the internet is not the most reliable source for technical data

the best engine by far is not available in australia but in much higher numbers in europe and it ####s all over the honda s2000 even though it has the same technology four piece alloy design. But it kills the huge s2000 for weight, quantity, size, design, power and budget. Sorry to offend some of you datto diehards but Ill always love my dat 1000 and its measly 625kg standard no radio no heater no passenger sunvisor!! poor mans ice cream box. I love dattos for handling, power, quirky funk styling on a budget.
However I also love new technology for the masses and the K-series was designed as the replacement for the a-series BMC version and if you look at whats available like KAD twin cam head for that old a-series donk youll see what I mean. The K-series is the next design the japs copied in the s2000 honda (honda used to work in conjuction with rover till 93)
Open your mind and check out:
http://www.btinternet.com/~v11ufo/kseries.htm and
http://members.tripod.com/~RoverSD_1/k-series.html
and www.caterham.co.uk
(original still produced pommie not malaysian lotus 7 r500 - r500 stands for 500hp per tonne!!! and world record 0-100mph-0 11.44 seconds from a 1950's design!!!)

Engine weights are always suspect, you're right about that. I should add a disclaimer, but I figured it was a useful comparison even so. If I was measuring, I would include the Intercooler as that's a required part of the engine package. Even more useful comparo would be the engine/trans combo weight. Who knows where those measurements came from (well, you can see where I got 'em).

One link I consulted but didn't list is this one (worth reading for what it says about the weight of various engines): http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/tech/0104scc_atunersguide/ The 13% figure in this article is where I calculated the SR20 weight and from it estimated the KA24 weight.
