Guys,
Have just finished installing a 2 5/8" Splitfire Tachometer. I had a look in the tech section (B110 wiring), to see how to hook this thing up.
Anyway it is working but the light is not. The bulb and connection inside the Tacho are fine. I suspect that something is not right with the spade terminal connection at the back of the Speedo which connects to the dash lights. Is there another way to hook up to the dash lights to get the light in the Tacho to work??

You can scotchlock into the headlight 12V wire.
But it would be better to cut into the headlight wire, and neatly tape it up.
You could use a voltmeter to figure out which wire, or look at the 1200 wiring diagram to get the right wire.
But a wire that feeds a backlight in the dash cluster will also work.
I expect the tacho light will also need to earth someplace.
Heaps of options.

Dattodude,
The Tacho already is earthed to the ute, so I would assume the light is earthed as well. I tried wiring into the parking lights wire under the dash (Green / Blue), but still not working. Will give the headlight wire a go. The low beam I think is Red/Black.
cheers,

Sorry man, you are right, the parkers is the go. Did you test for 12V with a multimeter? Sounds like you got the correct wire G/L.
Do the parker lights work? This isn't rocket science you must be missing something simple.

Chris,
Parking lights work and the bulb works as I took this out and tested it in the room light. I cannot think of anything else. I do not have a multimeter but it should have worked on the parkers. This has got me rooted and you are right it should be simple. Might duck down to the auto electrician on Saturday, will probably only take 5 minutes.
As I have said before I am not an auto electricians arsehole.
cheers,

I am 90% sure that there is a spare wire near the Heater/ciarettte lighter/radio which is live when the lights are on. Thats what I wired the light on my boost gauge to.

Guys,
Finally got the light to work. Dattodude was on the right track. The light was not earthing itself to the Tacho properly. Its a fault with the design. So I jammed another wire between the lightbulb holder / light and earthed it back to the dash. Apart from that the Tacho wired up easily. One wire to earth, another to the Coil (-ve), one to the dash clip on the speedo (power), and the other to the Ignition switch. Looks good and I will post a photo soon. Bolted the thing through the dash.
Also installed one of those Jaycar air evaporative coolers. Only cost $30 and wired it to the Cig Lighter. It works pretty good but you need to have it sitting in some sort of tray as when you turn corners water pisses out everywhere. On the straight no worries. It takes the edge off on the hot days but no more then that. On longer trips you would need to carry around an esky so that you can cool the block and refill with cold water. Not sure they are really worth the hassel but was an interesting exercise.
cheers,
Daz
