Cable Breaks

The speedometer cable usually lasts forever. There are two common reasons why it will break:

  1. Mechanical kink or breakage, for example if you drive over a tree branch and it pulls the cable
  2. Bad or missing engine ground wire.
Additional reasons
* Lack of grease
* Break in cable allows water which freezes in winter
17711.jpgAlbum 17711

I think you'll find this is caused by poor/dirty ground strap from the engine to the body inside the engine bay.

It only takes once, and the cable it screwed, as it melts the nice polyethylene coating on the inside.

See how the cable's protective plastic appear worn..I'd say it melted during starter crank. Then when the cable gets some speed up, the plastic grabs and the cable snaps.

Swap Cables

All 56-series 4-speed or 5-speed use the same cable.

For 60-series (4-speed or 5-speed), the speedo driven gear is slightly further back on the transmission. Some stock 1200 cables will work, but not all (depending on length).
22337.jpgAlbum 22337 1674.jpgAlbum 1674

For 63-series transmission a longer cable is required.
14289.jpgAlbum 14289

For 63-series gearbox, use a 610/710/810 cable, or a B210 cable.

NOTE: The B310 featured a clip-on cable instead of screw-on to the speedometer head. So the B310 cable will not interchange with the 1200 speedometer.
