Datsun introduces its new '1200'
By Dan Jedlickaᴳ
Datsun, a Japanese automaker which is beginning to 1970 challenge U.S. automakers almost as strongly at Toyota, has introduced a new car to compete against U.S. and foreign autos in the growing subcompact market.
Called the "1200," the four-passenger car comes in a coupe or two-door sedan and looks a lot like Lincoln-Mercury's hot-selling imported Capriᵂ. The list price should make the ""1200" competitive, with the coupe at $1,866 and the sedan at $1,736.
"1200" has a race-proven, four-cylinder engine with a tough five main bearing crankshaft to reduce engine noise, vibration and wear. Datsun says the 69-horsepower car will hit 90 miles an hour, but made no mileage claim for it although the car should easily get more than 20 miles per gallon.
Standard equipment includes a floor mounted, four-speed transmission, front disc brakes, steering lock, front bucket seats and three ash trays. The coupe has a standard fold-down rear seat.
Datsun says the "1200" has well-balanced" handling qualities. Rubber suspension bushings are used to prevent vibration and noise and eliminate the need to lubricate "many parts," it adds. The auto's turning radius is only 38.9 feet, with 3.4 turns getting the steering wheel from lock to lock.
The car, which has a steel body of unitized construction, can be loaded with optional equipment, including a stereo radio, tachometer, ski rack and radial tires.
