Hitachi H165 differentials uses a 165mm (6.5") ring gear. One was fitted to Datsun 1200 Sunny Trucks (B120). Early (H165 pre-1973), H165B Type I (1973-1979) and H165B Type II (from July 1979). The gear sets do not interchange between the various Types.

Identification
H165, H190 is 8-stud removable center. H145/H150 is also 8-bolt/8-stud.
New Type uses M11 bolts, all others use M10 bolts.
Chassis ID code is HC
Flange
H145: scalloped flange, bolt hole rectangle 36 x 50 mm
H150: 45 x 54 mm round or rectangular flange
H165: 45 x 54 mm round or rectangular flange
There are some differences between flanges on H165's, some long (~217.5mm from carrier mounting face to driveshaft flange face), some short (~202.5mm). Depth of hole for centering boss varies also.
H190: 50 x 60 mm, round or rectangular

EXAMPLE: HF38 = H190 with 3.889 ratio was factory fitted
Axle code is on Chassis Identification plate 1980-on, in the engine compartment. Starting in mid-80s, Axle Code is on door-jamb sticker.
Factory LSD has a sticker on the back of the diff housing.
Counting
To verify the ratio in the vehicle matches the original equipment (or build tag), you may count turns of the wheel vs turns of the driveshaft. If slightly less than 4 turns of the driveshaft results in one turn of the wheels, it is a 3.9 ratio. If it takes a bit more than 4 turns, it is a 4.111 ratio.
Even better is to note the stamped numbers on the ring gear. For example, this unit is stamped 39:11
39 divided by 11 = 3.545 ratio
Pinion gear is similarly stamped
Factory LSD has a sticker on the back of the diff housing.
Chassis Identification plate 1980-on contains axle code:
Overview
Datsun Competition (later Nismo) used to sell various ratios:
- H165B Type I (to 6/79): 3.545, 3.7, 3.9, 4.111, 4.375, 4.625, 4.875
- H165B Type II (from 7/79): 3.364, 3.545, 3.7, 3.9, 4.111, 4.375, 4.625, 4.875
Available from production vehicles: 3.7, 3.9, 4.111 & 4.875 reference: diff ratios
You can get 4.1:1 and 4.875:1 ratios quite easy, it is the same diff that Bluebirds (rwd Maxima) and C20 (Datsun Vanette) -- some with aluminum centers -- and some 4wd Datsun Pickup (non-1200 ute) front diffs (those are wider assemblies, though, so just use the center section). For example: A10 Stanza/HL510 (1978-1982): 3.7:1 180B (610) wagon: 3.89:1 Series 1 Bluebirds (810): 3.89:1 Series 3 Bluebird wagon (910): 3.89:1
Pit Road carries the H165 part (LSD Nismo P/N 38420-RS110). [DatRats] also has been known to carry the 1200 ute stuff.

Alloy Carrier
The real advantage of an alloy diff is in the reduced unsprung mass, which is particularly important in a light car like a 1200.

Swaps
Swapping an H165 into a 1200 can be great to match larger engine swaps. Sometime H165 is fitted because LSDs are more available for the H165 than for the H145 or H150.
See: Diff Widths
Datsun B110 (H145): 51.36 in (1305 mm) or 1185 mm axle flange-to-flange (less brakes) Datsun B310 (H150): 53.5 in (1360 mm) Datsun C20 Vannette: around 1400mm (105mm wider than a 1200) Datsun V510: 53 in (H165 wagon) Datsun A10 wagon (leaf type) 49" between backing plates. Estimated 53" axle wheel flange to flange.
The best swap candidate for Datsun 1200 is the H165 assembly from a Datsun 1200 Truck (B120). But they are not direct bolt-ins, as the spring mounts, shock mounts and brake lines/cables are slightly different. Some minor fabrication is needed.
Likewise for Datsun 510 axle swaps.
Datsun A10 axle is only 2 inches wider, so use postive offset (FWD) wheels to make up the difference. A10 has 4-link mounts, unless you get the wagon version which is leaf sprung.
