The Hitachi H190 differential has a 190mm (7.49 inch) ring gear and can handle about 285 lb. ft. of torque, making it suitable for larger V6 or drag racing supercharged 1200s. H190 is the strongest live axle Hitachi fitted to Datsun cars (C200 from pickups is larger), and is available with lightweight aluminium carriers and a variety of stock ratios.

There are some differences between flanges on H165's, some long (~217.5mm from carrier mounting face to driveshaft flange face), some short (~202.5mm). Depth of hole for centering boss varies also.

Factory LSD has a sticker on the back of the diff housing.

Counting

To verify the ratio in the vehicle matches the original equipment (or build tag), you may count turns of the wheel vs turns of the driveshaft. If slightly less than 4 turns of the driveshaft results in one turn of the wheels, it is a 3.9 ratio. If it takes a bit more than 4 turns, it is a 4.111 ratio.

Even better is to note the stamped numbers on the ring gear. For example, this unit is stamped 39:11

Widths

Gearset weight is approximatly 8 pounds.

Swap Notes

Since H190 is larger, the driveshaft needs to be a couple of inches shorter.

H190 from 1982-1983 S110 has disc brakes and is a direct bolt-in for a B310 axle.

H190 from 1984 S110 is also a bolt-in but has drum brakes and is a bit wider (about 2").

The S110 units can be used in B110, grind off the 4-link brackets and weld leaf-plates.

Several Datsun owners have swapped an H190 into the Datsun 1200s. The Datsun 320 pickup rear axle is one inch narrower than the Datsun 1200 unit.

NOTE:

  • There are at least four carrier types, which can only fit specific gear ratios
  • There are various incompatible axle types/side gears, so swapping center sections doesn't always work

When swapping diff carriers assembled (pumpkin), you may swap the side gears to match your axles.

H190 RING & PINION SETS

To install a 4.375, 4.625 or 5.125 ring and pinion into a third member equipped with a 3.700, 3.889 or 4.111 ring and pinion a 4.0mm/.157" ring gear spacer must be fabricated. Due to a smaller pinion shaft the 4.875 and 5.874 ring an pinion sts are interchangeable, but cannot be installed into third members equipped with other ratios.

Datsun 320 pickup uses a rear axles 50" in width with H190 diff -- narrower than a stock Datsun 1200 rear axle, making this a low-cost swap for high-power engines. But it uses 6-lug axles.
