Each body style (sedan, coupe, wagon) uses a different kind of number plate lamp. Truck uses the coupe type.

Overview
The type of lamp corresponds with the bumper type.

Sedan
Sedan light fits into the top of the bumper, and illuminates the plate from below.

Sedan Update
For USA market, the rear number plate light changed in 1973 to meet higher government standards of illuminating the plate. Coupe license lamps already were bright enough, so only the sedan was updated.

Coupe
Lamp type #H18 is used coupe & ute
Two are used on each coupe, hidden under the bumper, one above each license plate bolt. You can see the holes in this photo:
Coupe lamps are not normally visible until turned on, because they are up under the bumper.
Pickup
Datsun 1200 ute uses same license lamp as the #Coupe.
Type #H18 lamp
Placement: Like the coupe they are hidden from normal view, except instead of the bumper, they are under the Lower Rear Panel.
H18
Type H18 lamps are used by #Coupe and #Truck
Marked "SAE L 69", "IKI 6003" and "JAPAN" and "E4 455"

VB110 uses a single large chrome license lamp just above the number plate:
