If you look between the intake and the valve cover you can also see the head bolts.

I don't think that this is an A series engine. I saw one of these recently & I believe it is a derivitive of the older E series engines. Look at the two fasteners on the rocker cover centerline that hold id in place.

These are used as an industrial engine only & are an agricultural kind of design in this era of twin cams & 16 valve engines, yet this sturdy engine plods on day after day, year after year without fuss delivering a fair days work in exchange for nothing but neglect & abuse.
With its maximum revs limited by the govornor & running on LPG, about the only way to kill it is with an axe.

I was told they are the H type engine.
I actually phoned NIssan Forklifts here in adelaide and enquired about new a-series engines. The bloke told me the only difference is the dizzy setup and cam, as for carby etc he didnt know. Said he can get bare new engines for around $2500.

inlet manifold doesnt look like H-series... I could be wrong. Two bolts through rocker cover could be H-series, my dad's has a finned alloy rocker cover though

OK so the finned alloy cover must be off a roadster. This may not be one, but from memory H-series inlet manifolds look like this:
