Im sure this is not the hottest setup for the distributor, but its way better than points. It installs in place of the points. A plastic collar with 4 magnets slips over the distributor shaft, under the rotor. Red wire to +12V at ballast resistor, Blk wire to -side of coil. I've never had a problem, but I use to keep a set of points in the car just in case. |

Re: Pertronix Ignitor #1741 I know that this thread is over 4 years old, but the subject is still relevant to many menbers.
Points are a form of ignition switching that was invented shortly after the turn of the 20th century & have not really been improved-on much since then. They work well enough but need constant maintainance to keep them working properly & frankly, these days, that's a mug's game.
When I was still using points in my 1200 coupe, it didn't matter how carefully I set them & tuned the engine, it never ran 100% right, even at idle.
I bought a near new but pre loved Pertronix kit from a fellow forumite & have never looked back. They are not really a 'performance' system but more of a 'points replacement' item. I included a Bosch GT40R coil in the upgrade simply because I had an old one laying around & also some NOS Bosch Platignum plugs because the local garage had some old unsold ones going cheap.
The platignum plugs will fire across a larger gap with the same voltage as before, so I opened them up a whisker over the stock gap & stuck 'em in.
Well after a very comprehensive tune up the engine both idles & runs better than ever & starts within one crankshaft revolution when cold & half a rev when hot. It's bloody amazing & none of my mates can match it, even with their new cars. Best of all, my ignition tools & timing light are gathering dust on the shelf. Electronic is just set & forget.

Re: Pertronix Ignitor #1741 It looks like you've got an autometer mechanical water temp adapter installed. Did you have to re-thread the hole for that or is there a part that fits and do you have a number for it? I've got a couple that are close but nothing will work.

Re: Pertronix Ignitor #1741 Sorry this response is late. Yes I had to open up the hole and rethread it to fit the water temp adapter. I think it's a 1/2-?NPT pipe tap. I drilled and tapped the hole a little at a time 'till the adapter fit. I think if you go too deep the bulb will bottom out in the water passage and not seat in the adapter properly. The adapter came with the gauge.

Re: Pertronix Ignitor #1741 There was a similar unit the Optronic that used a chopper disc and photo=optical sensor. coupled to a CDI tey work great. Dont know where you get them now though?

Re: Pertronix Ignitor #1741 I had one of these in my previous 510 and it worked GREAT! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wanted to ditch the points. The stock electronic distributor works fine, but they can be hard to find and parts can be expensive if they fail. The Ingnitor is about $60-70usd but worth every penny. Last time I looked at buying the "black-box" for the Nissan dizzy it was over $100!
