finally got the pics of my new cage from my mate with the camera...

double intrusion bars, front legs closely follow contour of body and are tied into the A pillar (see reflection). main hoop braced to front legs. and diagonal member in roof.

It's a little dark, but you can also see I treated myself to the Sparco wheel I've always wanted :)

Took about 4hrs just to cut the dash out to fit around the front legs of the cage. Then it had to be assembled in place - bare steel frame mounted first, then dash pad, etc etc

Hey L18, that's a great looking car. Where do you run it at the moment? Cage looks awesome!

I ran the crossbar under the dash of my Sunny, but had to do what you described. Removed steering column bracket, and all the brake pedal brackets etc. I installed a reverse mount willwood pedal box while we were at it. So now we have the pedal box mount between the cross bar and the firewall, with the new steering column bracket aiming the column down between the brake and clutch pedal. It was a tight fit but looks like it should work great.

Once again, your car looks great dude.... if you are in NSW I would love to come out and see it run.

Cheers,

Mark.

I'm in Brisbane, but I'll be coming down to Bathurst for the Speed Weekend on Dec 6 & 7. Can't pass up an opportunity to drive on parts of that track!

I've seen your website Mark, that Sunny is going to be an absolute weapon!

The guy's name is Eddie Fowler. He is in S.E. QLD, just over an hour west of Brisbane. I can get his details for you if you are really interested, but it shouldn't be a drama to get a cage done in Sydney. Andrew (ca18det_man) & Chris (converted) have both recently done cages for their coupes. I think they both used Bond Roll Bars gear... You're probably better off talking to them first.

 Re: L18_B110
only drawback is that the cage weighs 59kgs! It's like carrying a passenger around, but atleast it is useful weight - the 1000, 1200, and 120Y coupes are just crying out for a cage for some rigidity as they have no rear bulkhead whatsoever, just a big open box...

Can you tell me if the guy that built the cage welded a cross bar in under the dash going from one side of the front leg to the other. In rally cars this stops any flex where the floor pan joins the firewall and up over the front part of the tunnel. They then take bars out through the firewall and weld then to the strut towers for extra strength and stifness.

sorry 1200coupe, I didn't see your question until now, when another cage discussion came up. In IPRA we are not allowed to have any member of the cage outside of the cabin, so cannot go to the strut towers. Keeping it IPRA legal just keeps my options open for the future, and would make it easier to sell if I ever wanted to - not bloody likely!

I wanted a dash bar, but the practicalities of fitting it in while keeping the original instruments meant that he would have had to cut the steering column support bracket, and then support the column off the bar. and that would have tipped me over budget at the time, but I intend to add that and new passenger side seat mounts soon.

Thanks for that. I knew you would eventually find my question and answer it. Interesting how much different forms of racing have such different rules and regs on cages, my coupe has crossbar under the dash and then to the strut towers but from there forward I like to leave it unbraced so if we ever have another big off it acts like a crumple zone to help absorbe the force of impact It works well when everything goes bad.

I like your coupe, looks like a good bit of gear. I must get off my ass and organise some photo's of mine so others can check out all the good bits. Once you own a good coupe I think it gets in your blood and from then onn your hooked

Paul.
