So what's the deal with the ignition? Does the computer run the sparks only?

Dunno. Maybe they have a way of cutting out the afm function. Wouldn't suprise me. There's obviously a good reason why they run this setup as opposed to doing the DET. The Japanese seem to have a a cult group of owners and tuners running normally aspirated DE's in their S13's. Probably just to be different.

This is what I wanted to do with my KB10 but the rego nazis in this country would have made it too difficult.

Josh wouldnt those Nazis accept a carbed ca18 if you showed great emission readings as you had to do for you a15?

Here we have to run the engine as it came from factory and if you dont then the EPA test cost around 2-3k each time it fails emissions.

This is the main reason Ive stayed away from injected engines and of course that I have technophobia and lack of funds for a properly setup aftermarket system. I love the mechanical beauty of carbs specially motorbike ones.

The other possibility is the L18 series bottom end with the ka24 head as someone has done already. This means you could have carbs on a twin cam headded L series. 2 x 34mm inlet valves and a 39mm exhaust valve would have incredible potential.

Same here as far as keeping it a factory setup. If it was carbed to begin with it's tough to go EFI (and expensive- around $2500 US) as well as vice versa. That goes for the engine itself as well as the car. For example, putting an EFI CA in the 1000 would be easier than putting a carbed CA in because you're putting an already existing setup into a different body but if you change engine types PLUS create a induciton setup not offered on the engine you're installing then you've got two battles. However, putting a turbo or supercharger on your engine is okay, no questions asked.
