So, Ade, you begin by saying you know which box it is, then cover your tracks later in your post saying "he couldn't tell me which it is".
Did you know if it was 4 or 5 speed yourself?

I find it strange that he didn't send you the info, but it also seems you are confident now you know which box it was - though you didn't conclude for us whether it was a 4 or 5 slotter.

Both sides seem to be leaving information out/being economical with the truth.

Was there ever any need for this to go past PM's and emails? doubt it.

In *big western victorian town* there should be one paddock with a massive amount of stuffed (comprehensively farked through winter paddock thrashing) dattos, mainly 200B's, 120Y's and at least one B10 2 door sedan (I broke the front suspension in that one). Thats where our Ex paddock race cars go to die...
On the opposite side of *big western victorian town* there is another place with the current crop, last I knew we had a 260C (full 'lectric pimp options!), 3 200B's including an SX with its 5 factory mags, A bluebird, a 120y and a fairly farked 180B SSS 2 door...

No, I am Not saying where.

I had no idea the Stanza X-member was astraight bolt up, all the steering stuff bolts on ok?

In that case I'll get a sunny and a stanza and go from there. L18 would be okay actually, just thought L20 would mean less spend for more torque...

G'day,
Looking at turning a sunny wagon into a cheap track thrash car/mountain bike hauler/parts runaround...

Now, stock they have a severe lack of both power and handling, so...
To remedy the power situation, how hard would it be to wedge an L20B into one? It should be easier than the earlier cars, right?
Has anyone attempted this conversion?

For handling, I was thinking decambered main spring pack and extra leaves in the rear - the wagons are leaf aren't they?
For the front, I was wondering if anyone has converted to S13 silvia struts/uprights in a 1200/120y/Sunny. People seem to be fitting them into just about everything lately (AE86, HR31 skyline and so on) and secondhand coilover/damper adjustable units are cheap and easily available. The need for 15" wheels is a pain though. If its a no go, I'll try something a bit more traditional.

Finally, wheels, how would something like 15x6.5" +17 fronts , 15x7" +15 go for fitting?

Sorry for the heap of questions!

Im running a bw vn 4 pinion diff in my ute and i know that il never blow it up there plenty off 10 and 9 second vl turbos down here with the same setup. The diffs in the skylines are 4 pinion but unless you get a silloette or gts diff they only have 25 spline axels

Actually, all R31 Skyline diffs are 28 spline, whether they are open or LSD and regardless of model.

However, all R31 Pintara diffs run the 25 spline axles and 2 pinion centre.

As long as it is from the Skyline with the RB30E six cylinder, and not the pintara with the CA20E 4 cylinder, then it will be a 28 spline diff.

The Pintara crown wheel and pinion set is worth getting though, as its a 4.1:1 ratio. The six cylinder skylines only came with 3.7:1 (manual GX, Silhouette), or 3.889:1 (automatic and all GTS models).

D, there are a heck of a lot of different BW LSD centres available, and a heck of a lot of different ways to set them up.
I don't really understand what "pretty crap and clunky" means in any case, given that as far as I know all those LSD's you mentioned are pretty similar in basic design.
Certainly all the Silhouette's I've been in haven't been particularly clunky or noisey in their LSD action. They can be prone to "single spinning" when they are up in the high mileages, but a well rebuilt, shimmed, sprung etc centre should be quite good.
Just taking a 15+ year old skyline diff, shortening it and jamming it in the car will produce just as crap a result as any unrebuilt 15+ year old diff will. Bottom line? if you've driven crappy BW skyline diffs, its most likely either age or poor setup causing the problems.

The Skyline diffs can be clunky or whiney (whether open or LSD), but they can be set up properly to eliminate these problems -and the problems seem confined mainly to the original car - most often due to the pinion carrier bearing wearing and allowing the pinion to ride up and down on the crown wheel, and harmonics in the 3.7:1 and 3.889:1 ratio CWP sets. Easily fixed though.

There are also NUMEROUS aftermarket options for the BW centre, from the 4WD systems mechanical locker, Detroit TruTrac, through to KAAZ aftermarket Torsen centres.
In any case, you get the correct stud pattern and a housing thats a heck of a lot lighter than a Mazda commercial or Hilux diff.

Just something about the R31 skyline diffs, if you do decide to get one shortened to suit + retain the discs + stud pattern for the 1200..

The Pintara R31, which is the CA20E 4 cylinder model, has only got a 2 pinion centre with smaller axles (lower spline count), whereas the six cylinder R31 skylines - the skyline runs the same basic 4 pinion, 28 spline setup as the VL turbo, V8 commos, XR6 etc.
However the six cylinder rear end would be either 3.7:1 or 3.889:1 ratio, where the 4 cylinder one is 4.1:1.
The gun setup would be an LSD or spool in a skyline housing with a pintara 4.1:1 gearset (or even lower, I believe the same basic BW diff is in a huge range of aussie large cars). That way you'd get a decent gear ration, the discs you want, and the strongest axle setup.
The only bad thing about the R31 rear discs is the calipers have a habit of seizing up (so use reco ones), and the handbrake, at least in the R31, isn't very strong. Though that may be rectified somewhat by only having to pull up an 800kg car, not a 1300kg one...

Sounds pretty insane!
I noticed an L20ET pretty cheap at the local importers, I wonder how much massaging would be required to jam it into a 1200... haha or maybe even stick the turbo bits on an L28 and jam THAT in there..
Finish with some watanabes + longchamp XR4's with Nitto 555s on the back, for that old school Japanese streetfighter style... Would be something different to chase the HPI rwd drag top 10 in (either under 2400cc with the L20ET, or over 2400 with the L28 )...

Yes, I too think it would be a silly idea..

Oh , also, I think there may be some sort of Datsun/Nissan club down here, as I have occasionally seen a big group of Datsuns/older Nissans parked up together here and there (last time I saw them was at the university a couple of months ago), but I have no idea who to get hold of or what the story is.

Here is my modern Datsun...

G'day guys,
I'm down here in Hobart, I've only got a late model Datsun unfortunately - a 1989 R31 Skyline sedan.
I do call myself a Datsun lover though, I've had a B10 2 dr sedan (R.I.P), 120y, and a 200B SX at various times.
I'd like to get a 240K coupe and build a GT-R lookalike with a stroker L28.. Came very close a year ago but just missed out on a low km 240k for $1300
For now my old datsun plans for the near future are to buy an L28 to build slowly. The plan is to fabricate some mounts so that I can sit the cleaned up motor+headers+triple carbs in my loungeroom with a plexiglass top as a coffee table.. (probably with the crank and internals removed though, at least until it was all machined up).
