Yep clean all mounts off, and get them to shorten long tube to small axel size and then shorten and respline long axel to new length!
Then this way u only need to shorten and spline one axel

the diff wont be centered, normally the diff is offset abit to the drivers side, but in doing it the way supa said it offsets it to the passenger side
its the cheapest way to do it and its fine

Just give the car and diff to a shop and tell him what you want and they'll measure it all up etc. 1. Less #OOPS#ing around
2. 99% chance of a near perfect fit
3.warranty
4. Easier
5. More chance of it being done properly the first time instead of u missing something/ or not doing something right.

Pay a lil extra for a proper job

you should look through the previous threads on this subject and realize that it sounds like you don't know what you want yet. there are some important pieces of information you need before you even start, firstly what wheels/tyres are you using? 2)what brakes do you want? 3) 4 or 5 stud? You mentioned custom axles, there is $600-$700 just there. to cut and shorten then respline an axle is $150-$180 each , cut and shorten a housing then re straighten it after it is welded is $300-$400 depending on the donor housing ,are you going to supply the donor housing and axles /brakes or do you expect the shop/ fabricator to source that too , and what about the gear ratio and hemisphere what ratio do you want? do you want a LSD? do you expect it to be reco'd?
$1600 might sound up there but if you want a profesional job done that's what it takes. I can already hear the winging and belly aching when it fails because you want to short cut the process. Here is a pic of a 9inch housing i built for a drag car housing alone cost $1000
