Yeah well I feel like I wanna cry so upset with my car...
(Yeah I am a freak)
I took off at the lights on the main road in Canberra and I was fine till I got to third gear. The car made a "flappity-flappity" noise and put the clutch in and waited for a second and then put the clutch out and it was fine in 3rd and in 4th then I went to turnright off the street and I waited for my chance to go accross in first and then I went to go and the speedo stayed still and the tacho went to 4000... Hmmm... Clutch input car in neutral select 1st gear agin. Take clutch out... RAttly sounds...
Everyone who was behind me and then went around me had enough time in their day to yell abuse at me through their closed windows (Why people do that I have no idea) or honk at me but 15 cars went past before one person asked if I needed any help.
And she was a soccer mum going to pick her kids up. She parked accross the road and helped me push my car over the gutter and onto the median strip. (It was a steep gutter alright? Doesn't make me any less of a man!)
Yeah so then I got my dad to come and tow me home.
I am ready to cry.
I finally got back to work and everyone was asking me why I was so mad and upset looking.
I feel about his damn car like it is my baby.
(Yeah still a freak)
And it has let me down again. First with the alternator then with the short in the wiring then with the lights not working.... And now this...
I feel like my child (the 1200) is one of thos JErry Springer out of control teens, always doing things to annoy me but I still love them anyway. And now it is like finding out that my baby just had a heroin overdose or something...

Anyway... The thing is I wasn't really giving it to my car or anything. And now I can start my car with the clutch out in first gear and it just sits there makes woobley noises at me.

So disapointed.

And the thing is I have no money at the moment. I can't afford to have this fixed.

UNLESS.... My friend has an N12 pulsar and he has a spare clutch from when he upgraded his clutch to button clutch. It is around the same size. We have always talked about putting it in my car. Would it fit?
Someone please get back to me!

I'm going to go to bed and cry...

PS sorry about the long post...

Hang on Lobster

I am sure most of us have been trough this kind of problems. When you are dealing with cars at the age of 20 or 30 years, you must be patient. Last Christmas my car clutch fliped away too and I tooked one week to replace it. Took the gearbox out, replaced the clutch and couldn't put it there again since the disk was out of center. This hapened in a garage 5 meters below the road. So i couldn't even tow the car. Finally I made a tool for centering the disk and assembled eveything. Altough I have other cars I always goes bezerk when my b310 is out of order. For the other cars I dont give a S**t, however my DATO must be always perfect. Recently I had to replace both Alternator and Starter at the same month.

I confess that sometimes it passed trough my mind to let my car away, but that was just for 15 seconds.

Ricardo

bah!!!

youre looking at it all wrong lobster, i reckon these are the times youll remember down the track and laugh about it, they turn in to good memories ... almost, ive got a clutch and stuff you could have, just drive down and pick it up

i managed to get my rego written down twice in ten minutes last night, pulling handbrakies and doughies in an industrial area, the second cop breath tested me and told me i blew .01 (im still on P plates so not allowed any blood alchol reading) but i havent had anything to drink for a few days, when i say i havent had anything hes like "dont bullshit me", "you cant lie to me" and all this crap, but i reckon he was lying to me trying to scare me, makes me loose a lot of respect for cops, and they wonder why eveyone hates em, didnt get any fines or anything

anyway back to the important stuff, there i was trying to pull my first doughie in my 1200 on bitchumen, started in first gear gave it about 5000 turned the steering down and let out the clutch, raaaagh straight to 8000 , so i back off then think twice and grab second, raaagh see 7500 and quickly change to third, spun about 720 by now, let clutch out in third she revs up gets to about 5500 and sits there spinning round quite nicely, i couldnt believe it though third gear?, did a couple more later but mainly tried to practice handbrake turns, they can be fun, except the one where i crunched second gear

yeah so im a hoon out there giving 1200's and their drivers a bad name, so what gotta have fun!

So.... anyone know if N12 pulsar clutch is the same as a datsun clutch?
Or a site that I could copmpare part numbers on or something?

PS... In third gear? You legend! And the cop reckoned you were DUI and doing dougies (twice) and you got no fines? Better talker than I am!

Hey Dude,

I know how you feel. I was chasing my tail with my first 1200. I'd be going cool for a week or 2 and it would all go to sh#t the following week.I was forced to spend a fair bit of cash and time on the car, just to keep it on the road. Because nothing started as 'new', things seemed to break, one thing after another. The best thing you can do (if cash is low), is keep the car from getting all dented or rusted out. Also try your best to keep inside the car clean, and well maintained. It's here that makes the difference between an old car and a new one. You'll be making all kinds of silly excuses one day on why you should get a newer car.

Anyway..As for the clutch, why are you sweating it. You should be able to get another clutch for $20 from the wreckers. I would imagine all A12,A14 etcs are the same (take your old one to compare). The frontwheel drive ones may be different.

If you lived in Sydney, I'd dig one up for you. I might have one on the back of an old engine. But I reckon you'd get a reasonable second hand for less than $50. You need any old clutch. But remember, most parts aren't made for 'racing' and should be treated with some 'Mechanical Sympathy' :)

Maybe I'm just getting older...With cars and all things mechanical, my age has taught me that fun is directly proportional to cost

ps. I'm in a photo in the latest Fast Fours and Rotaries Magazine (Dec 2002). It's an article on the 2002 Sydney Datsun 1600 Nationals.

Chris.

This might sound stupid but the way you describe it, to me sounds like 1st gear is blown!
You say 3rd and 4th were alright then when you took off in 1st there was nothing!
Are you sure when you originally heard the noise you hadn't changed #### and actually gone from 2nd to 1st and blown 1st gear?
Just the way you describe it and plus you say you only checked 1st gear you don't mention others! But the sound you describe sounds like when my in my old 1200 I done a 15k/ph compression lockup in 1st and busted 1st gear!

But I supose you want it to be a clutch as its cheaper then a box!

I wouldn't be surprised if it is the gearbox, but I did try the other gears as well, and none of them worked.
My friend is gonna help me take it apart on Monday. guess I'll see what happens...

You might be in luck with the clutch. I can't find my catalogue right now but I vaguely remember the pressure plate and driven plate being the same on the A14 pulsar and the A12.I know the bearing is different.
Even if it isn't then Repco sell new clutches cheap enough. Around $80 trade from memory.R137N is the part # from memory.
Though it might be a gearbox prob as mentioned earlier.
If you can't get a good clutch deal I'll get you one. Just frieght might make it not worth it.

But A-series FWD & RWD clutches are totally different to each other, too bad because FWD flywheels are really light compared to RWD's.
