oil filter alternative

I use one of these. They are a little larger in diameter and may hit the engine block. I had to grind away a little of the block to clear. The long one hangs about even with the bottom of the oil pan on an A12.

You can use *any* filter for any A-series engine, any year. The Datsun 1200 B110 has lots of room to fit the longer filters, and the smaller ones work too.

Some have a flat gasket like in the photo here, others use a smaller O-ring. Either kind works, but be sure to wipe off the flange well before putting the new filter on.

Here are some part numbers for A-series Oil Filters:

Can someone explain the advantage of a larger oil filter.

Thinking it through to me it seems that a larger oil filter acts sort of like a surge tank for the oil pump, so the larger the better.

Someone who actually knows what they are talking about please intervene.....

The Nissan A-series engine already has a large surge tank for the oil, we call it the oil sump. You see, excess pressure it dumped back to the pan by the pressure regulator, so no worries.

The main advantage of a larger filter are twofold:
1. Larger filter element = better filtering
2. The larger ones are less expensive, at least in USA

I personally use the oil filter from a 1990-95 300ZX, as they have a better filtering capability. Use the 1 for the turbo
