I would say no because the bellhousings dont unbolt on an A series 4 speed, they are cast as one with the gearbox housing.

I say anything is possible. With a welder and grinder many things can be done.

Id say maybe. However, I'm not 100% sure any L-series had a 60 series box? Anyone?

63A - yes (stanza SSS etc), but good luck finding a 63A 4 speed bellhousing for an A block...

...and no, 60A isn't compatible with 63A as the 60 and 63 signify the distance in millimetres between the two main shafts in the box.

edit - I'd like to know if the L's had a 60A 5 speed cause I've got a spare 60A a series bellhousing laying about

Well A series boxes do come apart.

But half the gears reside in the bellhousing side of the box.

You could fit an l series box to an a seires front half, But you would need to start with an a series 63A bell housing/front section.
I just today scored a 63A five speed box, for an a series. They are kinda stumpy. I only paid $350NZD for it. (Yeah, I am gloating)
If you had the gear it would be possible to cut off an A series bellhousing, and tig it onto an L series box. But you'd need to know your stuff.

Just a thought but an A series auto box has a separate bell and I think they are flat on the gearbox end so another box should be able to be bolted on the back.

Another box yes, but not an L series.
I've done this with a Toyota T50 box.

Just have to iron the bugs outta the clutch and I'll share it with everyone else!
