Hey guys, Im looking at getting my Halfcage booked in to be done in the next few weeks, has anyone got ideas of what will give most strength and ridgity in the shell and also legalitys for CAMS, i havent gone and organised license yet so dont have the 07 book. I dont want someone to build me a lemon cage. Im looking at running supersprints and the odd hillclimb next year and would like to step up to improved production 2008/09. Ive been told i can tie in a full cage at a later stage also. If anyone also has places in Adelaide they would/would not recommend also let me know, i dont want to make a mistake and take it somewhere where they wont respect the dato and bodge it up. Cheers Sean Here it is at the moment, waiting for more money to be thrown at it;

Sean obviously me living here in the USA I can't recommend a cage builder but..........I would recommend you put the full cage in your car from the get go. When your upside down at 130 Kph is not the time to be saying "gee maybe I should have put a full cage in" The half cage will likely keep you from getting killed but your chances of serious injury go up with every piece of safety gear you opt not to buy. To give you a feel for things my coupe has about $1800 (US) in go fast bits (bought second hand) in contrast the cage , fire system , fuel cell , belts and seat set me back $2300 or so. My safety gear; Suit , nomex undies , gloves , shoes , helmet and HANS device set me back $1800...........so I have $4100 in safety gear in a $1800 dollar car. Take it from somone with 20 years of road racing experiance on 2 and 4 wheels , things go bad in a hurry. In the 16 years since I switched to cars I've used one piece of eqiupment.........the fire system in my sports racer (it caught fire at 130 MPH) and was I ever glad I spent that $300......you don't get to choose what goes wrong so Kharma dictates you must get it all. If this sounds outrageously exspenive , it is!!! But how much of a discount to you put on your life or your ability to walk or avoiding a 5 month stay in a burn unit. It took 2 1/2 years before I finally got a fully finished car on track and that was with the car already running and the suspension goodies on it. If you have to do some side work (it's what I do) then whip up some graphics for mates in your spare time to pay for this stuff. Sorry for hijacking your thread and preaching but don't skimp on this stuff.
Tom

Go to the fellas at Bond roll bars they do a half cage bolt in for around $400 plus freight...They will make it up from their templates and send it to you...that will be cams legal (well for certain events you still wont be able to get a log book with a half cage which means you can only do supersprints at a maximum which you dont need a cage for anyway) and it will be made from the right cold drawn welded steel tubing. Also with the Bond cage once you decide to do the full cage you just order the rest and fit yourself (extra $400 plus freight)

Here's a question that's been on my mind for a few weeks since I read the latest Race magazine, why aren't rollcages nikel bronze welded?
But back on topic I am opting for a full cage with bolt in side intrusion bars as soon as I can

I can vouch for Craig at Mad Dat - he did the 6pt in my car. Waiting time could be lengthy about this time of year though...
And what Converted says is true - forget about CAMs logbook unless it's a full 6pt up to date with the latest manual.
I've seen some of Walker's work in drift cars and it was pretty top notch - maybe this Ausrotary incident was a rare occurance?
But I'll bet Craig is cheaper.
BTW - how much did your seats cost and how easy were they to fit?

hey mate, you saw the cages i did with craig, not just saying it but he's the man when it comes to cages... im doing my own in my ute, but the precision he has with his work is next to none... The standard he made me fabricate those cages too is the best also. I have seen other workshops cages from around sa and they just dont compare to the safety level that he builds them too... dont get me wrong they all have to be "cams" regulations when it comes to racing but have a look at some other work he has done and you will see.. also, have a look at the diff between cams and drag racing regulations, cams are very strict compared.. its almost scary...

I have a Maddat Cage in my car... Awsome job. Thankfully I havnt had to use it yet but I have a mate who has had to rely on one in a mini and it saved his life, no doubt. Thats my two cents worth.
Cheers. Adam.

Cheers guys, I think im gonna chat to Craig tomorow see what he reckons, I just want to make sure i dont get a Lemon car i cant use in the future when i want to run Imp prod. I like the sound of those bond cages converted, im sure Maddat would be able to do something similar, a half cage for now and full cage later.
Tpnshow, I mounted them to the rails for now, was pretty straight forward, i drilled the velo mounts to suit the dato rails and used new bolts with nylocks. Im not sure if it is legal to do it that way, should be alright for now. Need to get the cage in so i can use them and start driving the thing.
I got the seats for $320 off ebay, they used to be in the autobarn dorift car. Im happy cause they used harnesses so no tears, just a few stains, im getting new covers from Velo anyway.
Does anyone know if they will check dates on seats for supersprints? I cant find a date on my velos at all?

Also thanks to Tom (Rallytwit) I completely understand where you are coming from there, its definitely not preaching! Just that i would like to continue driving it on the road until i step up to the serious stuff in Imp prod, I cant really see getting in and out of a car with a full cage much fun on a daily basis, the car has been off the road now for 8 months and im getting itches to go and register it.
Ive got a nomex lined Bell helmet from my karting days thats still in date and a nomex indy car pit suit I can use, I have nice sparco suit boots and gloves but they arent nomex. Do your gloves and boots and suit hvae to be nomex for Supersprints?
I need a CAMS manual i think...
