howdy all fellow datophiles
It`s been 7 years since i got the old girl (`69 vb10 wagon, A15, draw thru garrett To3).
Iv always run her on pulp and bp course+ every 5000 km. she is internaly stock.
Before buying her I got the guy to wind the boost down to 15psi from 30psi, (he regulary draged it at tarmac dragway tas. 12.7) so i wouldnt make a mess of her.
I dynoed her and got 105 kw @6000 rpm with 17 psi boost (my mates V6 commodore pulled 97 kw 30 min later).
I wound the boost out to 30 psi a couple of weeks later (130-140+ kw?) and gave her a go and there she stayed until 2004ish when i noticed she started knocking (pinging, pinking, detonating) at full throtle/boost on 3-4th gear change. I managed to get onto a source of avgas and the knocking stopped.
Alas I only got 6 months of high octane leaded bliss. So itwas down to about 20 psi and couple of degrees back on the dissy. It was was still very fast (she would whip hsv/r32/r33/s13/14/15/supra/blah blah those little "u r a bus" get a bit of a jump until she got onto boost)
last year i got a dellow 5 speed conversion and swapped it all in to a lighter shell (my very first car white `67 B10 2 door delux with 32k miles, wing mirrors, black roof/bonnet) and kept the boost at 20psi cause i didnt want to break my new 5 speed. A few weeks ago we went into town and I noticed "WOW" BP were selling BP ulitimate 98 oct (after all i live in tas.) so i filled her up. When we got got home i wound the boost up and the advance out a tad, I took her out for a blast Shiver me timbers 27 psi 3-4th, 4-5th no probs (100 mph). so back home more boost, more water/meth and back out 35 psi and no probs apart from servere wheel spin/axle tramp at high speed (175/13 inch).
I rekon thay have been winding the octane of pulp back? my dad tried some ultimate in his v8 commodore and rekons no differance ?
Iv wound the boost back down to 30psi and all is well but iv got to do somthing about the back end (factory shocks and springs 40 yrs old) any ideas?

CAN YOU KILL AN A-SERIES 90,000+ KM 30PSI AND ALL IS WELL?

Good read. I love the durability of your motor!

How old is your Dad's Commodore? The knock sensors in most modern cars are pretty sophisticated so it's not unusual for someone to not notice a small drop in performance.

Great story, so you have water injection? is that the key to the whole thing not self destructing like so many other big boost engines discussed on this site.

Love to see pics and any more details, really exciting to hear about your car.
