120y rim woes

I picked up some cheap 13x5.5 jelly bean mags with 205/60 tyres, with the intent of putting them on my 74 120y sedan.

I've hit a few snags so i'm trying to work out whether to ditch them and get something else or persevere and make them work.

1st problem; the wheel fouls on the front brake caliper which protrudes by about 15mm.

2nd problem; the studs are nowhere near long enough - will need to be about 30mm longer on front and 15mm on rear.

So it seems with any alloy wheel i am going to need longer studs as the existing studs are only just long enough for the stock steelies. Is it hard to put new studs in? I know they just hammer in but is it a mission to get them in? It looks like I might have to pull the axles to get enough space behind the hub for the studs.

Also i'm not too keen on getting a spacer to make the wheel clear the caliper, since they are illegal and potentially dodgey, i understand.

So has anyone put mags on 120y struts without needing a spacer? if so what sort were they?

I really like the wheels but seriously considering ditching them because even if I go to all the trouble of addressing these problems there is no gaurantee that it will work - its looking like the wheel may protrude beyond the front gaurd (extra 50mm from tyre + ~15mm spacer.)

Thoughts? Experiences?

Hey mate, not sure if this will help, but...

Got the TRX style rims on, with low, square profile BF Goodrich tyres on. they are 15's 195x50x15

They have magnesium wheel spacers, and I just drove the ute 2100 km without a worry with the wheels. I wouldnt worry too much about spacers being dangerous.

I took mine for a wheel balance and they used a bit of cardboard to centre the spacers after balancing the rims...
pretty technical stuff

The wheel nuts I am using are a long cylindrical type where half of the nut goes through the rim.

Studs are quite easy to change on the F10. Rears are the easiest, just take the drum off and knock in/ out. Fronts I had to unbollt the disc from the hub first. Its prob a similar setup for the 120Y.

Spacers not illegal here and I use them on my 300zx.

a 3/8" spacer is no big deal to mebut your laws may be different

nissan sells a longer stud over the counter, or you can get them from certain nissans at the wrecking yards

it's just long enough for a 3/8 spacer

i used 280zx struts/hub/calipers/rotors which narrow the track, giving me more clearance

and because i wanted to run 15's as street wheels, i used camber plates to give me even more clearance

r31 studs I think are longer and will fit.
Personally I'd sell them and keep looking, 13" rims arn't worth the hassle find another set which will bolt up

That's what I'm thinking tyrie.

Although I can get what I need from here, there's no gaurantee that I run into other dramas.

I would like to know what alloy rims others have put onto 120y struts with out spacers etc.

I dont think you should need longer studs just the right mag wheel nuts that go in deep, whack a pair of spacers on the front and away you go.

a little story...
I converted to 280zx front end, with the 3/8" spacer, the studs werent long enough, so i tried something, took my special datsun mag wheel nut to the auto parts store and looked at replacement mag wheel nuts... make sure they are the right kind!!!!! some have captive washers, but the important thing is the generic ones had a slightly different design with less unthreaded part, allowing me to get the spacer and the wheels on with the same oem studs, cost: about $12. minimal fuss.

practically any wheel on a 120y needs spacers, nothing was made to fit.. be glad you don't need to spend $300 on machined hub adaptors. i have a set that are un-needed now,

does the 280zx stuff narrow the track? i thought it widened, or is it the NA narrows and turbo widens a little..
