The motor industy is becoming licenced and its been a long time coming! What ive attached should pretty well cover everything. Its been a long time coming and I, being in the trade, am 90% behind it(still sympathetic for the home resto projects).

Sure you can still get away doing all the work but when the time comes to get an insurance claim for whatever reason their gonna ask for paperwork from a licenced mechanic. And if you say you work on the car yourself and have nothing to do with the trade... well i cant see you in the green anyway.

FOR WA
FOR QLD
FOR NSW

Might not hurt to look up your own state if its not listed, i stole the links from another forum.

NSW has got it right:

"If you are not carrying on a business and only repair vehicles owned by yourself, or your family or friends and do not receive any payment or reward for your work, then you do not need to have a licence."

Don't be scaremongering..

For years now you have been required to have a repairers licence to repair vehicles for customers.
Thats why workshops are required buy law to have their licence number on the outside of the building.
A workshop can not get insurance if it is not licenced.

We have annual registration checks for the purpose of inspecting if cars are roadworthy. I think that is the part that needs to become standard practice for every state.

fair enough
I'd sell up everything and take up boutique beer drinking if it was the law that I really couldn't work on my own car.

I think you will find there is nothing to strict about it.
If you have a trade certificate in the specific trade, you already have 100 point and qualify for the licence.
The business owner needs to be trade qualified to get the licence or the foreman needs to get the licence. All other workers will be classed as supervised regardless of trade licence or not.

But where does it say about repairing your own cars?

All this information is under the heading of "Consumer Protection". That means businesess charging customers for work.

oh yippee, another licensed trade, all it means is mechanics can charge more, like plumbers, electricians and pest controllers, the other licenced trades. i have been a signwriter for 18yrs, (tradesman), today it means sh-t, i have never seen a boss ask for tradesman papers ever!. if you can do the work that's all they care about. it's experience not a piece of paper. The problem will be all tyre shops etc that do brakes, clutches etc. they we need qualified tradesman (with our skill shortage) & we have to pay them more, which means the end user will pay more.

I will not ever let any machanic, licenced or otherwise, touch any part of any car I own, ever... as long as they can belong to an union that can have them do half-assed work with no concequienses to there actions, forget it....

and yes, I'm in the trade too... scary
