Years ago I lived in a share house and one of the girls boyfriends had a Fiat 124 sports.
He was way out in the country and used to visit her on weekends in Sydney. We got talking one night and I asked him how it cruised in 5th. You guessed it he had no idea.
Having owned Toyota utes and even a TR engined Vanguard ute many years ago I am used to at least 5 gears and find I try to do the next change up all the time. Has any one ever done a bellhosing to adapt a datto 1600 or similar box? I know about the Dello but the toyota boxes are so heavy.

a 4 speed box wont let you put it in the 5th gear spot so if it went in and it wasnt 3rd sounds like a 5 speed ( score )

toyota boxs are about the same size and weight not much difference

I've had a phantom 5th in a 4speed before -
Unless it actually is a 5 speed it just means something is worn inside the box well I assume so anyway - when I put mine into "phantom drive" all that happened was that it locked in nuetral at about 70kmh and I hade to pull over an wressle it back into gear on the side of the road.

good luck!

just an idea but what if from standstill you try to take off in 5th. if it is fifth it'll obviously stall but at least it will jump a bit. if it just revs and doesn't move you'll know it's a phantom gear. anybody tell me if there is something wrong with this.

yeah, I agree with Wolki, whack it in "5th" at standstill & feather the clutch & see what happens...

Pussies!... Take it up to 100kph on the freeway. Ram it into fifth. Even if it doesn't want too because it's a 4 speed then rev the bejesus out of it, hold your breath, close your eyes ( or wear safety goggles ) and drop the clutch. If your cars still drives and your not dead it's a 5 speed. If not you need a new gearbox so BUY A BLOODY 5 SPEED
