$500US!! Can this be confirmed by our US datsun community?
I have a reliable source that has been witnessing this dilemma in the last month and obviously brings shock horror to old car lovers.

One more comment while I'm at it. I've been spending a lot of time lately at the metal yard. I'm absolutely stunned and amazed at what people are dragging out of the woodwork to sell for scrap. Antique cars that would have gotten frame-off restorations last year are coming to be sold as scrap. The average price being paid for a car in any condition right now is about $500. It comes right off the trailer and into the bailer where it is converted into a metal cube about a yard across, tires, seats and all.

The implication to us is, gliders are going to get rarer and much more expensive. A car or small truck with a blown engine or no engine at all is still worth about $500. If you find something cheaper than that then you better grab it. Around here scrap metal yards are running TV ads! so the word is out.

It's like a secret, wreckers won't say what they are paying. I understand a mininum $200 for smallest cars and $300 for regular size cars -- but only if you ask. Otherwise they still charge customer to pick them up.

I also heard that some US steel mills have re-opened, it was said that the freight costs now outway offshore-production savings for some "specialty" steels.

California is paying owners $650 to scrap a currently registered car -- and advertising for them.

seems like a reasonable topic to me, it concerns datsun owners more than most.
